  • U. Sagayam is a 2001 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre.
  • His office door bears a sign reading “Lanjam thavirtthu, nenjam nimirtthu”, means Reject bribes, hold your head high.
  • Once, on Madurai’s busy main road, the district collector, U. Sagayam, saw a young man talking on a cell phone while riding a motorbike. Then he asked his driver to stop the man, and in a punishment, he told the person to plant ten saplings within 24 hours.
  • He started his career as a Sub-Divisional-Magistrate (SDM) in Ootacamund District, Tamil Nadu.
  • He joined the Central Secretariat Service in 1989, after qualifying the Civil Services Examination. After working for seven months in New Delhi, Sagayam voluntary resigned from the Central Secretariat Service.
  • In 2009, he created history by becoming the first IAS officer in Tamil Nadu to upload details of his assets on the district website.
  • 20 days before the commencement of the voting, Sagayam started educating people about the value of their votes and urged them to reject any kind of bribe offered to them by any person. He also took efforts to detect any such vote-buying practices, and also confiscated more than 20 lac rupees intended for the purpose. For his efforts in conducting fair elections, the Election Commission of India honored him.
  • His report on May 2012, accused several senior officials involved in illegal quarrying of Granite and suggested that losses to the state from illegal mining amounted to at least Rs 16,000 crore(Rs 160 billion).
  • He could not continue with his investigation as later on he got transferred as managing director of Co-optex, a handloom weavers’ cooperative in Chennai.
