Controversies | Racist tweet against Adonis Stevenson In April 2015, before his fight with Canadian boxer Adonis Stevenson, Sergey Kovalev posted a tweet with a photo which was regarded as racist by many boxing fans. In the photo, he was seen with a kid, wearing a t-shirt which had a print of a gorilla wearing boxing gloves. The caption of photo was 'Adonis looks great!!!' Kovalev was criticised by many fans around the world. He later apologised on Twitter and wrote that he was not aware of American history due to which he made the mistake of posting such a tweet. Assaulting a woman In June 2018, Sergey Kovalev was present at the opening of a boxing gym in Big Bear, California, where he met a model and actress named Jamie Frontz. He later went to Frontz's rented cabin and started making out with her. When she felt that Kovalev was being aggressive, she tried to pull away which made him angry. He kicked her dog and punched her in the face which caused injuries to her nose and neck and a concussion. She later filed a police complaint against Kovalev and demanded $8 million in compensation. On 9 June 2018, Kovalav was arrested and charged with felony (assault likely to cause great bodily injury) and he was released on 27 August 2018 on a bail of $50,000. Later, both parties reached a $650,000 settlement but lawsuit remained active due to non payment of full amount. In 2020, Frontz filed an appeal to dismiss the lawsuit. Removed from a flight On 15 July 2019, Sergey Kovalev was on a flight from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. He allegedly kissed the hand of a female co-passenger and threw cash at her after which the girl started crying. She complained to the flight authorities authorities after which Kovalev was taken off from the plane and later rebooked on another flight. He was not arrested as no complaint was filed against him. On 13 January 2021, he failed the drug test as the test was resulted positive for synthetic testosterone and metabolites. On 7 January 2021, he was tested for second time in Oxnard, California but the results again resulted positive for the same banned substances. Some Lesser Known Facts About Sergey Kovalev
- Sergey Kovalev’s father left the family when he was around 3 years old. He later lived with his stepfather who died in 1995. Kovalev later reunited with his biological father.
- He liked playing ice hockey during childhood; however, he gave up the sport since his parents could not afford another kit after his kit was stolen from the dressing room.
- He grew up in a tough environment and lived in a two-room apartment with his family. He washed cars in front of gas stations and sold newspapers when he was 5-6 years old to earn money.
- He played various other sports before starting boxing and wrestling at the age of 11 years in 1994. He practised in the private gym of Sergey Vladimirovich Novikov, who became his first coach.
- In 1997, when he was 14 years old, he started boxing in the amateur boxing championships and won many medals in different tournaments.
- He has been in several street fights during his growing years. He once saw a man being beaten to death by a mob.
- He has been the champion of Russia and a medallist in various Military Championships around the world.

- In 2009, he met Egis Klimas, a Russian businessman and boxing manager based in the USA. Klimas later became Kovalev’s manager, took him to the USA, and paid for his expenses from 2009 to 2011.
- On 5 December 2011, he fought with Roman Simakov in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Kovalev knocked his opponent down in the sixth round and the fight was stopped one round later and Kovalev was awarded a TKO (technical knockout) victory.
- Simakov was taken to the hospital as he lost consciousness in the ring. He later lapsed into a coma and died after three days. It was the first time a fighter died inside the boxing ring in Russia.
- Many fans criticised Kovalev after this fight and called him a heartless killer. Kovalev defended himself by saying that he and his wife went to church to pray for Simakov’s health. He also said that he wanted the fight to stop but neither Simakov’s corner nor the referee stopped the fight.
