Some Lesser Known Facts About M. V. Suchindra Kumar

• M. V. Suchindra Kumar is a three-star general of the Indian Army who held the post of the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) before becoming the 45th Vice Chief of the Army of Staff (VCOAS) on 1 March 2023.

• After completing his three-year-long military training at the National Defence Academy, M. V. Suchindra Kumar underwent training for a year at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun.

• Suchindra Kumar became a second lieutenant after completing his training at the IMA in June 1985 and was commissioned into the 1st Battalion of the Assam Regiment.

• Later, he was sent to Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, where he attended the Young Officers (YO) course at the Army War College.

• He commanded a company in his battalion after getting promoted to major.

• As a major, Suchindra Kumar attended the Junior Command (JC) course at the Army War College in Mhow.

• He went on to command a battalion of the Assam Regiment following his promotion to colonel.

• Later, he commanded the 59th battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles (Assam) in Jammu and Kashmir and took part in numerous counter-terrorist operations.

• Thereafter, Suchindra Kumar was sent to New Delhi, where he served at the Military Secretary (MS) Branch.

• Suchindra was later posted to Cambodia, under the aegis of the United Nations (UN), as a Sector Senior Operations Officer in the Transitional Authority.

• Thereafter, he served as a member of the Indian Army’s training team in Lesotho.

• Throughout his career, Suchindra has not only attended military courses in India but also outside India. He has attended the Cooperative Security in South Asia in Sri Lanka and the United Nations Senior Mission Leaders Course in Egypt.

• Suchindra Kumar was later sent to Mhow, where he served as an instructor at the Army War College.

• After getting promoted to brigadier, he assumed the command of the 120 Infantry Brigade of the Indian Army deployed along the Line of Control (LOC).

• Later, he was posted to Dimapur as Brigadier General Staff (BGS) of the 3 Corps (also known as the Spear Corps). The corps functions under the Eastern Command of the Indian Army.

• After becoming a major general, he was posted in Jammu and Kashmir, where he commanded an Infantry Division deployed along the LOC.

• Later, he was posted to the Military Intelligence (MI) Directorate in New Delhi as Additional Director General of Military Intelligence (ADGMI).

• On 14 October 2020, Suchindra Kumar became a lieutenant general and was sent to Nagrota, Jammu, to relieve Lt Gen Harsh Gupta and assume the position of General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the highly active White Knight Corps (also known as the XVI Corps). He served as the GOC till 28 October 2021. While talking about taking over the command of the corps, Kumar, in an interview, said,

• In 2020, Suchindra participated in a motorcycle expedition from Kargil to Karakoram Pass, organised by the Indian Army to celebrate India’s victory over Pakistan during the 1999 Kargil War.

• On 1 March 2021, he assumed the position of the Colonel of the Regiment of the Assam Regiment and the Arunachal Scouts.

• From 28 October 2021 to 1 July 2022, Suchindra served as the Director General of Military Intelligence (DGMI) in New Delhi.

• On 1 July 2022, Suchindra replaced Lt Gen Sanjeev Sharma and assumed the position of the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Strategy). He remained at the post till 1 March 2023.

• He became the 45th Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) on 1 March 2023 after Lt General B. S. Raju was relieved from the post of VCOAS and posted as the GOC of South-Western Command.

• To maintain his fitness, Suchindra Kumar practices yoga regularly. He often participates in half-marathons.

• He is very passionate about golfing.

• His position as the Vice Chief of Army Staff was taken over by Upendra Dwivedi after his retirement in February 2024.
