Boris Diaw is a French basketball executive who used to play as a power forward. He is currently the president of the Metropolitans 92 team in the LNB Pro A, France’s top basketball league.

Diaw’s mother, Élisabeth Riffiod, is famous as one of the best center players in French women’s basketball history and is recognized in the French Basketball Hall of Fame.

Diaw has a half-brother, Paco Diaw, who initially played as a guard at Georgia Tech before transferring to Lee University, a smaller NAIA school in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

In 2003, the Atlanta Hawks selected Diaw as the 21st pick in the NBA draft. He signed a multi-year contract with the Hawks on July 10, 2003.

In August 2005, Diaw was traded to the Phoenix Suns, along with two future first-round draft picks, in exchange for Joe Johnson. As a player, Diaw was versatile, mainly playing forward but known for his skill in various positions due to his passing and scoring abilities.

During the 2005–06 season, he played different roles including point guard, small forward, and center, adapting to the team’s needs due to injuries. On December 10, 2008, Diaw, along with Raja Bell and Sean Singletary, was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for Jason Richardson and Jared Dudley.

During the NBA lockout in 2011, Diaw played for JSA Bordeaux in France. He returned to the Charlotte Bobcats in December 2011 but was waived by the team on March 21, 2012. Shortly after, he joined the San Antonio Spurs for the season.

On July 12, 2012, Diaw signed a new two-year contract worth $9.2 million with the Spurs and was a part of the team that reached the 2013 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat.

Diaw renewed his contract with the Spurs on July 15, 2014, for three years, worth $22 million. He played in the NBA Africa exhibition game for Team Africa on August 1, 2015. On July 8, 2016, the Spurs traded Diaw to the Utah Jazz, including a future second-round pick and money.

In November 2016, a leg injury caused Diaw to miss some games, and the Jazz waived him on July 13, 2017. Later, on September 17, 2017, Diaw joined the Levallois Metropolitans in France for the 2017–18 season, where he played in both the LNB Pro A and EuroCup.

In 2000, Diaw was part of the French junior national team that won the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. In July 2006, he became the captain of the French national team, leading them to a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2005.

He was the key player in the 2006 FIBA World Championship and helped the team win a gold medal at EuroBasket 2013. In 2014, he guided the French team, without Tony Parker, to a bronze medal in the FIBA World Cup.

In 2009, Diaw became vice-president and part-owner of the JSA Bordeaux basketball club. The following year, he was promoted to president, a role he held until 2017.

Diaw launched UKIND, an environmentally friendly clothing brand, in 2010.

On July 4, 2019, Diaw was appointed as the new president of the Metropolitans 92 basketball club, succeeding Jean-Pierre Aubry.

In Phoenix, Diaw showed his versatility in basketball, playing various positions from center to point guard. His nickname “3D” came from his all-around abilities in the game (“drive, dish, defend”) and a play on his jersey number (3) and surname.

Diaw and Tony Parker, a fellow French NBA player from the Spurs, have a close friendship. They used to be roommates, and Diaw was the best man at Parker’s wedding to actress Eva Longoria.

In 2005, Diaw established Babac’Ards, a charity focusing on sports and educational support for young people in Senegal.
