After completing her formal education, she achieved 18th rank in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Service examinations.

Her first appointment as a surgeon was at the Army hospital in Ambala Cantonment, Haryana.

Payal Chhabra was appointed as a resident doctor in the surgery department at Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College in Karnal, Haryana, in 2020.

Later, she was appointed as a specialist surgeon at an Army hospital in Khardungla, district Leh in Ladakh.

Payal Chhabra joined the Indian Army as a Captain in January 2021 and was promoted to Major in 2022.
