  • She was 1.5 years old when her father passed away. Her family then faced severe financial problems. They struggled to afford food and even had to live in government schools and other places when it rained as the ceiling of their hut would leak.
  • Her mother later started working at the Prarthana Nursing Home, Auraiya; she earned a monthly salary of Rs. 500-600.
  • Shivani started going to school at the age of 4. After she completed her 8th grade at a government school, her mother could not afford to provide for her further studies. Shivani then earned money by working in others’ fields and got admission to a private school.
  • Shivani rarely attended school regularly. She only went on examination days.
  • When she was in 9th grade, her mother sold crops and gave her Rs. 7000 to pay school fees. However, Shivani gave that money to her sister instead and asked her to buy a phone. Her sister added Rs. 1000 and bought a Vivo phone for Shivani.

  • Shivani then made dance videos on TikTok under the fake name ‘Janvi Sharma’ for about a year. When her neighbours found out, they asked her mother to stop Shivani from making more videos as they were concerned it might influence their children negatively.
  • After that, Shivani began making videos in fields while she worked, ensuring nobody in the village noticed. When her mother found out, she beat and cursed Shivani. Due to this, Shivani did not make videos for 2-3 months.
  • One day, Shivani earned Rs. 200 by working as a labourer in a field and decided to buy slippers for her family, none of whom had a pair. On her way home, she began making a video and casually said. ‘hi frendaa’ (hi friends). The video soon went viral, mainly because of the way she greeted her audience; the video got over 40 million views overnight.

  • After TikTok was banned, Shivani’s mother went to Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, and arranged Shivani’s marriage to a boy, who later refused to marry her because of her dusky skin and lack of formal education.
  • A few days after the marriage incident, YouTubers Abhishek Kumar and Anshul Kumar visited her house and urged her to speak to them for a few minutes. They introduced her to YouTube and suggested she could start making vlogs. Shivani, however, thought it was pointless.
