  • Mojtaba Khamenei is the 2nd son of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran.
  • He first came to know that his father was a revolutionary when the National Security and Intelligence Organization (SAVAK) arrested Ali in 1976. His elder brother, Mostafa Khamenei, told him the truth.
  • During the Iran-Iraq War from 1980-1988, he also fought under the Habib Battalion. At one point in the war, he went missing while recapturing Mehran but was found later.
  • In 1989, when Ali Khamenei became the Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba started his clerical studies in Tehran under his father and Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, who later became the Chief Justice of Iran.
  • In 1999, he went to Qom where he started studying under Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah Yazdi, Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpayegani, and Ayatollah Sayyed Mohsen Kharrazi.
