  • Mendis was introduced to cricket by his father, who is very passionate about the game.
  • Mendis first started practicing with both arms in the nets at the age of around 13. He bowled with both arms in a match for the first time in 2014 in an Under-17 match against St Joseph’s College; He took four wickets in the match.
  • Mendis made his List A debut on 30 November 2015 against Badureliya Sports Club in the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament.
  • Mendis captained Sri Lanka’s U19 side for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
  • On 21 August 2018, Mendis made his Twenty20 debut for Colombo against Galle; he took a wicket in the match.

  • Mendis made his first-class debut for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club against Chilaw CC in the 2018–19 Premier League Tournament on 30 November 2018.
  • In November 2019, Mendis was appointed as the vice-captain of Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh. He also led the team as vice-captain in the 2019 South Asian Games

  • In November 2024, Mendis was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad team for Rs. 75 lakhs in the IPL mega-auction.
  • Mendis postponed his honeymoon and started training at the earliest to participate in the IPL 2025 tournament.
  • Mendis made his IPL debut on 3 April 2025 while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens; he took a wicket and scored 27 runs in the match.
