• From 1982 to 1987, he served as an assistant coach (defensive coordinator) at Skyline High School in Oakland.

• In 1987, John Beam was appointed as a head coach at Skyline High School. He served in the position till 2004. During this period, the school won 15 football league championships. In 1988, he was promoted to the position of Athletic Director of the school.
