He grew up in a Hollywood family. His family, Rick Hurst, was also a renowned American actor, and his mother, Candace Kaniecki, an acting coach, ran the Candace Kaniecki (Herman) Acting School in Santa Monica, that inclined his interest in acting since young age.

In 1993, Hurst’s acting career started with guest appearances on popular television shows such as “Saved by the Bell: The New Class” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.” These early roles provided him with valuable experience and exposure in the industry.

His breakout role came in 2000, when he portrayed Gerry Bertier in the sports drama Remember the Titans.

After the success of the show, he bagged major roles in films like “We Were Soldiers” (2002) and “The Ladykillers” (2004).

From 2005 to 2007, he gained recognition for playing a recurring role as Michael Benoit, Allison DuBois’ half-brother, in NBC’s supernatural drama series Medium.

In 2008, he was cast in an FX series “Sons of Anarchy” as Opie Winston, a role that earned him recognition and a fan base worldwide. In the first season, he was cast for a recurring role, and later promoted to a main cast member for all the next seasons.
