Some Lesser Known Facts About Prakrithi NV
- Prakrithi NV is a renowned transgender activist and poet. She is the first queer poet from the Adivasi community and the first transgender woman from the Paniya community in Wayanad, Kerala.
- Before publicly transitioning to a woman, she was originally named Vijeesh.
- In an interview, Prakrithi shared that when she was away from Wayanad for her higher studies, she met many supportive people who helped her better understand her gender identity. She added that their support helped her to reveal her identity publicly. She said,
It was to my friends in Adishakti that I revealed my identity first. They were very supportive. It helped me in coming out as a transwoman. Had it not been for them, I would have likely ended up as a sex worker.”
- In 2022, she returned to her hometown dressed as a woman for the first time and formally began living as Prakrithi.
- Initially, her mother and younger brother struggled to accept her as a transwoman. During that time, in an interview, she said,
“It was not easy. But I had to do it, for my peace of mind. My mother and my brother have still not accepted the way I am, but surprisingly, my community has welcomed me wholeheartedly. This was unexpected.”
- When she revealed her identity, many children from her community reached out to her for guidance. In an interview, she shared that,
After I revealed my identity, many children and even grownups from our community have come to me to talk about their own identity and how they are unable to reveal it to the world.”
- She added,
I had to face several challenges from the day I revealed my identity. The fact that there are these challenges to face refrain many from revealing their true identity.”
- In 2023, she began her legal procedure to change her identity.
- Prakrithi NV is the general secretary of Adishakti Summer School, an organisation that works for tribal student empowerment and raises awareness about gender and sexuality among students. At the organisation, she advocates for education and seeks to challenge common misconceptions about transgender individuals, particularly the stereotype that all of them are involved in sex work.
- As a trained Paniyal tribe dancer, she trained students of SN Higher Secondary School, North Paravur, in the Paniya tribal dance for the Kerala School Kalolsavam 2025.
- In February 2026, the Aam Aadmi Party announced that they are planning to field Prakrithi NV as a candidate in the Kerala Assembly election from Sulthan Bathery. According to the party, as of 24 February 2026, her name is already cleared at the district level and is expected to receive approval from the state and central committees.
