Some Lesser Known Facts About Naim Qassem

  • Naim Qassem was born and raised in a Shiite family in Beirut, Lebanon.
  • He was originally from the village of Kafar Vila in South Lebanon. His father had come to Beirut as a young boy, searching for a better life. When Qassem was born, his father was working as a taxi driver in Beirut.
  • When Naim was 14 years old, his father bought a new house in al-Mousaitbeh, so they moved there.
  • In an interview, Nail Qassem revealed that his father was illiterate, but he always insisted that his son should receive a proper education. At school, Naim excelled in French and chemistry.
  • While still in school, Qassem became interested in religion and Islamic studies. No member of his immediate family was a cleric.
  • At a young age, Qassem began visiting the local mosque during Ramadan, where he was influenced by the clerics of the Shiite community.
  • In the 1970s, while studying at the Lebanese University, Qassem was one of the founders of the Lebanese Union of Muslim Students.
  • From 1974 to 1988, Qassem served as the head of the Association for Islamic Religious Education.
  • In 1974, when the Lebanese Civil War broke out, he joined the Amal movement of the Iranian-born cleric Imam Musa al-Sadr.
  • In 1978, when Musa al-Sadr disappeared, Naim parted ways from the Amal movement and started conducting his own research into scholarly Islam and traveling to various parts of Lebanon to attend lectures and learn about Shiite history.

  • On 2 March 2026, during the ongoing war with Iran between Israel and the United States, Naim Qassem’s organisation Hezbollah began launching missile strikes on Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

  • After the Hezbollah missile strike on Israel, Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, said that Qassem has become a “marked target for elimination.”
  • Lebanon’s government officially banned Naim Qassem-led Hezbollah’s military activities under the country’s law; however, in response, Naim Qassem said Hezbollah will continue fighting and will not give up its weapons.
  • Apart from his political career, Naim Qassem is also a writer and author, and published over a dozen books on religious and political subjects, including Hizbullah: the Story from Within, which recounts the movement’s foundation and ideology as it conceives them. Several editions of the book have been published, and have been translated into a total of six languages: Arabic, English, Farsi, French, Indonesian, Turkish, and Urdu.
