• Riya Ahir is a Mumbai-based actress, model, host and entrepreneur.

• She was born and raised in Mumbai, however her family hails from Agra, Uttar Pradesh.

• In an interview, Rira shared that she comes from a defence family. Her father served in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), while some of other members of her family have served in other armed forces.

• Riya completed her early education in Mumbai and studied Psychology at Sathaye College, however due to her work commitment she did not complete her studies. She is now pursuing her English Literature degree from Mumbai University through distance education.

• She trained in theatre for nearly 13 years, which helped her in building confidence as a performer.

• Over years, Ahir has built a career in modelling, acting, event hosting, and entrepreneurship .

• Riya first walked alongside the moving police van and repeatedly asked the police to explain the legal grounds for the detentions. When she did not receive a satisfactory response, she stood directly in front of the police van and refused to move.

• She remained in front of the vehicle for around 40 minutes until the detained protesters were released at Shivaji Park. Soon other protesters also joined her.

• After the detained protesters were released, videos and photographs of the incident went viral across social media and made her one of the most recognizable faces of the protest in Mumbai.

• After the incident, in interview, Riya said that she never expected to become the face of the protest. She added that she acted in instinct after seeing detained protesters including women being taken away.

I saw people stuffed inside the van. I tried to pull a woman out, but the police stopped me. So I stood in front of the vehicle and demanded that they be released.”

• Riya mentioned that her own experience with Indian education system motivated her to join the protest. She added that despite paying for her course, she did not receive proper response from Mumbai University, where she is pursuing her English Literature degree through distance education. She said,

It is not just about the NEET exams. It is about the system. I don’t know where I got the courage from, but probably courage is in my blood.”
