Some Lesser Known Facts About Abhishek Verma

  • Abhishek Verma is an Indian archer and an Assistant Commissioner at the Income Tax Department who has won many gold medals in various international archery championships. His world ranking in 2023 is No. 10 while his Asia rank and India rank stand at No 1. In 2022, he won a gold medal in the compound Men’s team event and a silver in an individual event at the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou.
  • When he was in class 8, he asked his PT teacher about which sport he should play, to which his teacher randomly replied Archery. He did what his teacher told him and after a few days, he started practising with a wooden bow. In an interview, he said that the first time he shot an arrow, he felt a connection to the game.
  • According to him, before he chose archery, he used to play lawn tennis. Since his parents could not afford to buy a lawn tennis kit for him, he decided to quit the sport and opt for archery.
  • He started playing archery in 2002. He used to practice regularly at the Delhi University Ground. He used to take part in sub-junior and national competitions. In 2005, he became a national champion.

  • In an interview, he said that he was not academically good, so his parents were proud that he chose archery and was doing well in it.
  • In 2006, he joined the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and started playing in various national tournaments there.

  • In 2011, he started preparing for his participation in world championships. At that time, the compound model was new in India, so with the help of his coaches and the internet, he learned about it.
  • In the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, he earned a gold medal in the men’s compound archery team competition alongside Rajat Chauhan and Sandeep Kumar. Additionally, he secured a silver medal in the men’s individual compound event.

  • In 2017, at the Archery World Cup stage one championship in Shanghai, the Indian men’s compound team, comprising Abhishek Verma, Chinna Raju Srither, and Amanjeet Singh, won the bronze medal by defeating Colombia with a score of 226–221.
  • He was felicitated by the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, Sushil Chandra for winning a gold medal in the compound team category at the Archery World Cup in 2017.

  • On 17 November 2021, he, along with Rishabh Yadav and Aman Saini, earned the bronze medal in the men’s compound archery team event at the 22nd Asian Archery Championship in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • In 2022, he teamed up with Jyothi Surekha Vennam and secured a gold medal in the compound mixed team archery event at the Archery World Cup held in Paris, France.

  • In 2022, it was reported that Abhishek’s wife’s bag containing a laptop, some documents and cash worth Rs. 1 lakh was stolen in Delhi’s Rohini area. A case was registered after which the police saw the CCTV footage and said that,

    We have seen the CCTV footage in which an e-rickshaw is seen approaching the car. We have sent a team to nab the accused. A probe into the matter is underway.”

  •  In 2022, Haryana’s Rishabh Yadav, who had become a national champion, in an interview, said that Abhishek was his mentor. Abhishek and Rishabh’s mothers were classmates, so Abhishek took responsibility for training Yadav when he started the game.

  • In March 2022, he won two gold and a silver medal in the Individual, team, and mixed team categories at the 41st Senior National Archery Championship (2022) held at Jammu.

  • In October 2022, he won the gold medal in the compound men’s team event at the 36th National Games in Gujarat.

  • In 2023, he won a gold medal at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre in the Asian Games in mixed team form. Both women’s and men’s teams won gold medals at the tournament.

  • In an interview, he added that he wanted to try rifle shooting so that he could represent India in the Olympics. He lacked this opportunity to represent India in the Olympics because of his genre ‘compound archery’ which is a non-olympian game.
  • He practises for eight to ten hours every day without fail. He does exercises between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. At 11 a.m., he attends his practice session. At 3 p.m., he does another practice session and then heads to the gym to workout.
