On 6 May 2024, Alam found himself in controversy when the ED discovered over Rs. 25 crore cash during the raid at the residence of a household help employed by Sanjiv Lal, Alam's personal secretary, in Ranchi. The raid was linked to a money laundering case involving Virendra K Ram, the chief engineer at the Jharkhand Rural Development Department, who was arrested in February 2023 over suspected irregularities in government projects. On 15 May 2024, the ED arrested him on the second day of interrogation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). On 10 June 2024, he resigned as a Cabinet Minister from the Champai Soren government and from the post of Congress legislative Party (CLP) in Jharkhand Assembly. Mr. Soren had earlier taken away all the ministerial posts from him and made him Minister without portfolio.
