• Amartya Bhattacharyya grew up in Kolkata.

• He spent much of his childhood in the peaceful surroundings of Sonarpur, West Bengal, which sparked his interest in nature and wildlife.

• As a child, Amartya enjoyed catching dragonflies and keeping them in bottles to observe them closely. He even studied their compound eyes before knowing about biology, though many of them died because he did not understand their need for a natural habitat.

• As he grew older, Amartya became interested in painting and acting.

• He was introduced to art at The Modern Academy in Kolkata, where he studied for ten years until completing his secondary education.

• His art teacher, Shri Siddhartha Mukherjee, encouraged him to explore different forms of art from a young age and challenge conventions.

• Amartya made his first stage appearance at the age of six and continued acting in school and college productions, as well as in later years.

• Alongside art and acting, Amartya has also been a keen cricketer and trained at The Sunil Gavaskar Foundation for Cricket in Bengal.

• As he could no longer act in plays or write for magazines while working in Odisha, he began looking for something new and eventually started making films with a handycam.

• Amartya did not initially see cinema as something he wanted to pursue and once felt that art was a waste of time. He enjoyed acting on stage because it gave him the joy of performing.

• According to him, no filmmaker inspired him when he started making films, as he had little exposure to world cinema.

• Amartya usually shoots his films with DSLR, such as the Canon 550D.

• He describes his approach to cinema as something that should come naturally, without fixed rules, conventions or commercial motives. For him, cinema is meant to exist for its own sake.

• Amartya does not make films for a specific audience. He believes a new kind of film cannot have a fixed audience because people have not experienced it before, so he prefers to build his audience through his work.

• Amartya’s interest in world cinema began only after he made ‘Boba Mukhosh’ (2012) and met filmmaker Manmohan Mahapatra, who appreciated his work. This led Amartya to explore and research the works of filmmakers from around the world.

• His debut feature ‘Capital I’ (2015) became Odisha’s first independent feature film. It screened at several festivals and became the first Indian film acquired by Italy-based sales and distribution company The Open Reel.
