Some Lesser Known Facts About Ashima Mittal

In 2017, Ashima Mittal became known when she secued 12th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

During her school days, Ashima was a bright student. She scored 94% in Class 10 in 2008 and 93.4% in Class 12 in 2010.

She was also a National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) and Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) scholar.

After completing her schooling, Ashima Mittal joined the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), where she studied Civil Engineering and completed her B.Tech. in 2014. She graduated with a CPI of 8.4.

That same year, she received the Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal for her overall performance at IIT Bombay.

After completing her graduation, she worked in the private sector for some time. She took a job with a company in Gurgaon, Haryana, India.

Initially, she wanted to gain work experience and explore the corporate world. However, she soon realised that a private-sector job was not what she wanted for her future.

During her final year at IIT Bombay, she had also worked with an education-related social service. This experience made her think more about the problems faced by the citizens of India and the role government officers could play in solving them.

Ashima Mittal then decided to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination as she wanted to work in areas such as education, health and social development, especially for children and women.

In 2014, she received the Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal at IIT Bombay for her overall performance at the institute.

In 2015, she appeared for her first attempt, but she she could not clear it.

In 2016, she secured 328th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination and was selected for the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax).

Ashima Mittal joined the service, but her main goal was still the IAS. Therefore, she continued preparing for the Civil Services Examination.

During the same time, she pursued a Master’s degree in Anthropology from IGNOU. She completed the course during her UPSC preparation. She chose Anthropology as her optional subject for the Civil Services Examination.

In 2017, during her third attempt in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, Ashima secured All India Rank 12. She was the third-highest ranked woman in that examination.

Her final marks were 1,100. She got 921 marks in the written examination and 179 marks in the interview.

Ashima Mittal was then allotted the Maharashtra cadre and became an IAS officer of the 2018 batch.

She was inspired by other UPSC candidates, such as Ashima Jain, Gaurav Agarwal, and Ira Singhal.

After joining the IAS, Ashima completed her training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie.

Her first posting was in Ahmednagar, where she worked as a Supernumerary Assistant Collector.

Ashima Mittal was then appointed as the Assistant Collector and Project Officer of the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) in Dahanu, Palghar district. She served in the position from September 2020 to September 2022.

During this period, she participated in many beach cleaning drives in Dahanu subdivisions.

Ashima Mittal also worked on problems related to tribal communities. One of the problems she noticed was the difficulty faced by tribal students in getting caste certificates. Many students and their families often had to visit government offices to get these important documents.

Under her leadership, a project was started to provide caste certificates directly at Ashram schools.

The plan covered 33 government-run Ashram schools in Vasai, Palghar, Dahanu, and Talasari.

Many students from Classes 8 to 12 then started receiving their caste certificates at schools. The idea saved students and parents from making repeated trips to government offices.

In 2022, Ashima Mittal was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad Nashik. She served in the position till 2025.

During her period in Nashik, she focused mainly on education and rural development.

She became known for starting an education program called Super 50, which helps bright students from rural and tribal areas prepare for competitive engineering entrance examinations.

These selected fifty students were given focused support through a residential coaching program.

Reportedly, six students from the first program got admission to IITs and IIITs, such as IIT Kharagpur, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IIIT Nagpur and other leading institutions.

During her tenure as the CEO of the Nashik Zilla Parishad, Ashima Mittal worked across several areas, such as education, health, agriculture, sanitation, housing and livelihood programs.

In 2023, she launched a product developed by a young farmer and student through the Nashik Engineering Cluster’s grassroots innovation program. The Zilla Parishad later placed an order for the product.

Her work in Nashik also included improving government organisations and making them more useful for employees and visitors.

Ashima Mittal started a Zilla Parishad office building which included various facilities, such as a library, gym, banking services, crèche, and canteen for people with disabilities.

That same year, she participated in Stone Ridge Marathon organised in Nashik.

In July 2025, Ashima Mittal was appointed as the Collector of Jalna district, where Ashima focused on taking government services closer to people in villages.

She then visited villages and spent time with local residents to understand their problems. During these visits, she inspected schools, Anganwadi centres, ration shops, Maha e-Seva centres and gram panchayat offices.

During some village visits, she stayed overnight so that she could understand local problems more carefully.

Reportedly, in one such visit, officials found illegal liquor sales at three places and FIRs were registered against them.

Ashima Mittal also resolved a dispute which involved a community hall meant for a women’s group.

In October 2025, she was given the additional responsibility and was appointed as the Municipal Commissioner of Jalna. She held the additional charge while continued working as district collector.

This additional responsibility came after the arrest of the then municipal commissioner in an alleged bribery case.

In August 2025, Ashima Mittal attended a training program on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for government officers and employees in Jalna.

In her speech, she encouraged revenue officials to learn about AI and use modern technology in government work where it could be useful.

In 2026, while talking about her first year as the Collector of Jalna, she wrote on social media that she took charge of the district while caring for a one-year-old child.
