Some Lesser Known Facts About Ashwin Sanghi

  • Ashwin Sanghi has been an avid reader since childhood and his mother and maternal grandfather used to gift him a book every week to read when he was young.
  • Ashwin Sanghi at the tender age of 12, was first told to accompany his father and learn the intricacies of doing business. He spent 3 months learning accounts from the accountant.
  • In 1995, Ashwin Sanghi was appointed as the Group Director of his family business ‘M. K. Sanghi Group.’
  • His family also had an automobile business and during one vacation, Ashwin was sent to a mechanic at one of the workshops to learn how to assemble parts of a scooter. The next holiday, he was sent to a car workshop.
  • Ashwin was regularly short on attendance during his five years at St. Xaviers College in Mumbai as he used to get called by his father to the office by 12 o’clock. He then started taking early morning classes as during the noon hours, he used to work on his family business.
  • During his time at Yale University in the United States, he used to write articles for the SOM Chronicle, which was the monthly magazine of Yale University.
  • After graduating from Yale, he returned to India and looked after his family business for 5 years.
  • In 2000, he started running the Vitesse dealership and eventually the Sanghi Motorcar Company, a dealer of Mercedes-Benz cars in Mumbai.
  • In 2002, his interest in business was dying out and he decided that he no longer wanted to waste his time in something he didn’t like which was his family business.
  • In the same year, Ashwin Sanghi was in Srinagar for a business trip and his flight back to Mumbai got cancelled for some reason. Having an extra day there, Ashwin went to Roza Bal (the tomb of the prophet) and the history of that place intrigued him to start writing about it for 2 long years and that’s how he got into the writing business and became an author.
  • Ashwin considers his wife a major source of inspiration for his writing as she was the one who supported and pushed him into it. Ashwin was quoting saying in an interview about his wife that

    She is a big part of my writing journey because she gave me the confidence to not be stuck in what I was not enjoying.”

  • Ashwin spends 6 months to one year doing the research work for his new book. After the research, he plots the book on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet where he divides the chapters and writes about 100 words for each chapter.
  • In 2007, Ashwin faced a lot of rejection from Indian publishing houses for his first book ‘The Rozabal Line’ as the publishers were looking for literary superstars of that time.
  • Ashwin ended up self-publishing his book ‘The Rozabal Line’ under his pseudonym (a false name in one of his novels), Shawn Haigins.

  • In the same year, UTV Software Communications announced that it had acquired the movie rights to the novel ‘Chanakya’s Chant.’

  • In 2013, a friend of Sanghi’s, Meru Gokhale, was working in London with Random House, the publisher of James Patterson’s books.
  • James Patterson wanted to use India as a backdrop in one of his writings and Gokhale suggested Sanghi’s name as a collaborator. That’s how Ashwin Sanghi and James Patterson ended up writing the thriller novel titled ‘Private India’ (2014) which was part of James’ ‘Private Series.’

  • In 2014, Ashwini started writing his famous ’13 Steps Series’ which was based on diverse topics such as luck, wealth, marks, health, and parenting.
  • Ashwin Sanghi has written many novels including ‘The Sialkot Saga’ (2016), ‘Keepers Of The Kalachakra’ (2018), ‘The Vault of Vishnu’ (2020), and ‘The Magicians of Mazda’ (2022).
