• James Hillier worked as a property surveyor in the United Kingdom for a few years after retiring as a 400m hurdler after the Manchester Commonwealth Games.

• In September 2002, he joined Connect Sports Consultants in Birmingham, United Kingdom, as a Director and worked in the position till March 2007.

• Malcolm Arnold, a national hurdles coach in the United Kingdom, informed James Hillier about several openings for apprentice coaches at British Athletics in 2009, so he left his property job for this opportunity.

• As an apprentice coach, ‘United Kingdom Sport’ selected him for an elite coach programme. They granted him a stipend of Rs. 10 lakh for his professional development.

• James Hillier worked as a High-Performance Coach (Sprints and Hurdles) in British Athletics in Bath, United Kingdom, from December 2009 to December 2016.

• After the 2012 London Olympics, when James Hillier was working as a high-performance coach, he coached Olympic medalist Emily Diamond.

• In March 2014, he began working in The Premier League of London, England, as a Professional Coach and worked in the position till November 2019.

• After the 2016 Rio Olympics, James Hillier worked as a National Event Lead (Speed) in England Athletics from August 2017 to November 2019.

• James Hillier then became the coach for India’s fastest woman hurdler, Jyothi Yarraji, and the fastest man hurdler, Amlan Borgohain. Both athletes have repeatedly broken national records while training with Hillier at the Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High-Performance Centre.

• In the next few years, he read every book he could find on his discipline. He travelled around the world and learnt from experts in different countries.

• James Hillier spent time with Gary Winckler, the former hurdles coach at Illinois State, to improve his coaching skills.

• He went to Texas for three weeks to work with Darryl Anderson (Texas Christian University) and Vince Anderson (Texas A&M University) on acceleration techniques.

• James Hillier spent time at Baylor University with Michael Ford.

• He then went to Germany to work with Rüdiger Harksen, Germany’s head women’s hurdles coach.

• James Hillier travelled to Canberra to work with his old coach, who was excellent at managing athletes. He also observed Mike Hurst, a 400m hurdles coach.

• In November 2021, he was promoted to the position of Athletic Director at Reliance Foundation in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

• James Hillier then settled with his family in Bhubaneswar, India.

• His wife, Alyce, a lawyer specializing in child protection, had to give up her career to move to India from England. Their two children, Billy and Isla, have grown up in India.
