Controversies | • Absent from Red Velvet's performance in North Korea In 2018, Red Velvet was chosen to go to Pyongyang in North Korea with other South Korean artists for a special performance from 31 March to 3 April. It became a controversy when, a day before the performance, media reports said that Joy wouldn't join Red Velvet for this event. It was alleged that the South Korean government didn't know about Joy not being there, and SM Entertainment told the press before telling the government officially the day before they left. The situation got more complicated with reports of Joy going to the Red Velvet Concert in Japan (28-29 March 2018) and the SM Town Concert in Dubai (6 April 2018) after changing her schedule for a drama. Even though she tried, Joy couldn't make it to the SM Town Concert in Dubai because of her drama schedule. It was also mentioned that during talks with the government, SM Entertainment had said that Joy might not be able to go to the Pyongyang event, and they got approval to send Red Velvet as a 4-member group. [3]Koreaboo • Allegedly misbehaved with airline employees In March 2022, a few workers from the airline alleged that Irene, Joy, and Yeri from Red Velvet were accused of behaving impolitely at the airport and on the plane. A flight attendant from Korean Air posted a message on the internet, which read, "I was on the same flight with Red Velvet once and Irene, Joy, and Yeri were very impolite. They treated flight attendants as if we were their servants. The other 2 members were kind. But I don’t understand why idols, in general, think they’re something special." [4]KBIZoom |
