Some Lesser Known Facts About Karunas

• When Karunas was twelve years old, he started producing Tamil folk music. He also started folk dancing and pop singing in films.

• During this time, he became famous with the name ‘Gaana’ Karunas.

• In the 1990s, he worked as a musician in the television show Naiyaandi Darbar, directed by Yuhi Sethu.

• After that, Karunas started working as a comedian.

• In 2001, he appeared in a comedy role in his first film Nandhaa, which was directed by Bala, who noticed his songs and offered him a role in his film.

• The film was a huge hit.

• Karunas met his wife Grace, a playback singer, at an inter-college singing competition, where he was invited as a guest. He liked her voice and offered her to sing a song in his music album.

• In 2007, he worked as a film distributor for the films Pori and Kattradhu Thamizh. The films failed to attract the audience, he then quit working as a film distributor.

• In 2008, Karunas received lead comedy role in the film Dindigul Sarathy. After that, he appeared as a lead comedian in many films, such as Ambasamudram Ambani (2010), Ragalaipuram (2013) and Lodukku Pandi (2015).

• In 2009, he founded the political party Mukkulathor Pulipadai and started working as its head.

• Apart from comedy, he also appeared in dramatic roles in films, including Thanga Meengal (2013).

• On 25 February 2017, when Karunas went to offer a garland to the statue of freedom fighter U. Muthuramalingam Thevar, an unknown person attacked his car with a slipper.

• After the police investigations, it was reported that the attacker was upset with his Karunas’ association with V. K. Sasikala, an AIADMK leader.

• In 2018, during a political speech, he insulted the then-Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K. Palaniswami. After that, he was was detained by the police.

• His younger brother made his acting debut in the film Vantharu Jaicharu, which was directed by C. Ranganathan. However, the film never released.

• In June 2024, Karunas was arrested for carrying live bullets in his hand bag at Chennai airport. During police investigations, he claimed that he took it by mistake.

• That same year, he lodged an FIR against many YouTube channels for spreading misinformation about him and his co-actors.

• In 2026, he made headlines when it was announced that he would contest the assembly elections from the Sivaganga constituency on the ticket of DMK.
