• Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was born and raised in Thakurgaon, East Bengal, Dominion of Pakistan, present-day Bangladesh. His ancestral home is in Mirzapur Village of Atwari Upazila in Panchagarh district of Bangladesh.

• His father, Mirza Ruhul Amin was a former member of parliament.

• He completed his senior secondary at Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School, and high secondary at Dhaka College.

• Later, he completed his graduation from the University of Dhaka.

• While studying at Dhaka University, he became involved in student politics. He was a member of the then East Pakistan Students Union (EPSU), now known as Bangladesh Students Union.

• After few months of joining, he was elected as the secretary general of the organization’s SM Hall unit in the university.

• In 1969, during the mass uprising against President, Ayub Khan he rose to become president.

• In 1972, instead of immediately pursuing a career in politics, Alamgir began teaching economics at Dhaka College.

• From 1970s to 1980s, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also worked in government position. He served in the administration of President Ziaur Rahman and worked as secretary to Deputy Prime Minister S.A. Bari.

• In 1980s, alongside his teaching and government career, he worked as an auditor with the Directorate of Inspection and Audit. He also worked with UNESCO.

• In 1988, he contested for chairman in Thakurgaon municipality in the 1988 municipal elections as an independent candidate, and won the seat.

• In the early 1990s, he joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) during the movement against military ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

• In 1991, he contested the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency for the first time as a BNP candidate; however, he was unsuccessful.

• In 1992, Mirza Fakhrul became president of the BNP’s Thakurgaon district unit.

• In 1996, Mirza re-contested from Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency and again lost to another Awami League candidate.

• In 2001, in the 8th parliamentary election, Alamgir contested as a Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate and best Awami League candidate, Ramesh Chandra Sen. In the newly formed Khaleda Zia‘s government, he became State Minister for Agriculture.

• In 2008, Alamgir contested again in the 9th parliamentary election; however, he lost to Ramesh Chandra Sen.

• In 2009, at the BNP’s fifth national council, he became Senior Joint Secretary General.

• In 2011, after the death of Khandaker Delwar Hosain, he became the BNP’s Acting Secretary General.

• On 2 August 2011, when Alamgir was travelling to attend a BNP meeting, his motorcade was attacked by an armed mob in Lakshmipur. He was unharmed; however, three vehicles were damaged and 10 people were injured. Later, Alamgir and his companions alleged that the attackers were linked to the ruling Awami League.

• In 2016, he officially became Secretary General of the BNP, a position, he holded for more than a decade.

• In 2018, Mirza Fakhrul Islam contested from Thakurgaon-1 and Bogra-6 as a BNP candidate. he lost Thakurgaon-1 seat but won Bogra-6 seat by a large margin. However, he refused to take the oath as a part of the BNP’s political strategy, so the election commission later decided the seat vacant and conducted a by-election.

• In 2019, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir became a Vice President of the Asia Pacific Democrat Union.

• In 2023, during the BNP’s major opposition movement, he was arrested after the October 23 political clashes. Police alleged that he was involved in a case concerning attacks on police and the residence of the Chief Justice.

• In 2024, during the political upheaval that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina‘s government, he remained one of the BNP’s most prominent opposition leaders.

• In February 2026, after the BNP returned to the power, Mirza Fakhrul Islam was elected again from Thakurgaon-1 and became Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-Operatives.

• In August 2026, after the party nominated him for the presidency, he resigned as BNP Secreatary General. His nearly 16-years periods as secretary general made him the longest-serving secretary general in BNP history.
