Controversies• In 2000, he was given a life-ban in cricket for his alleged role in match-fixing. But in 2006, the BCCI lifted his ban.

• In November 2023, Azharuddin was accused of siphoning Rs. 20 crore as the head of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The money was allotted for purchasing diesel generators for the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium in Uppal.
