Controversies	Corruption Charges (2003) In 2003, Indian social activist Anna Hazare made allegations of corruption against four ministers of the Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra including Nawab Malik. Anna Hazare alleged that Malik was involved in stopping the reconstruction of the Jariwala Chawl in Mumbai by MHADA to benefit a private builder. To investigate the corruption charges against the four ministers, the P. B. Sawant commission was set up in September 2003. The commission submitted its report in February 2005 formally accusing Nawab Malik, Padmasinh Patil, and Suresh Jain of the charge. Thereafter, he had to resign from the position of Minister of Labour. [4]The Indian Express Nawab-Patil clash in Deonar (2016) In 2016, a scuffle broke out between NCP leaders Nawab Malik and Sanjay Dina Patil during a party meeting in Deonar. While Malik alleged that Patil had fired at the venue from his weapon, Patil alleged that Malik’s supporters had charged at him with swords. Thereafter, the police filed the cases under sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to the attempt to murder and rioting, as well as under sections of the Arms Act, against the two. [6]India Today Accused Anna Hazare of taking money to sit on hunger strikes (2019) In 2019, Nawab Malik targeted Anna Hazare and accused Hazare of taking money to sit on hunger strikes. He claimed that the RSS funds Anna Hazare for his hunger strikes. At that time, the social activist was protesting against the Centre and the Maharashtra government for not setting up a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayukta in the state by sitting on a hunger strike at Ralegan Siddhi. A legal notice was sent to Malik by Hazare’s lawyer, Milind Pawar, seeking a public apology for the defamatory remarks. Additionally, the notice also featured a warning for a defamation suit against Malik if he failed to tender an apology. Consequently, Malik tendered a written apology to Hazare for the controversial statement, and he was pardoned by Hazare. Pawar, while addressing the media said, "After getting Malik’s response to our notice, Anna has said we should pardon him as good sense has prevailed over him and he has regretted his remarks." Nawab Malik vs Sameer Wankhede (2021) On January 13, 2021, Malik’s son-in-law, Sameer Shabbir Khan was arrested by Sameer Wankhede, former zonal director of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in an alleged drugs case. After Wankhede busted the cruise drugs case involving Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan in October 2021, Nawab Malik launched a tirade against Wankhede and levelled several allegations against him. Malik accused Wankhede of forging a scheduled caste document to clear the UPSC examination. Later, Malik leaked a birth certificate on social media, which stated that Wankhede was a Muslim. Malik posted photos of Wankhede's sister calling her 'Lady Don', her family bogus and claiming that she visited the Maldives for the purpose of extortion. Later, NCB ordered a vigilance probe against Wankhede after a witness accused him of asking for a Rs. 25 crore bribe to release Aryan Khan. In November 2021, Sameer Wankhede was taken off the controversial cruise drugs case, with the agency transferring the investigation in the matter to NCB’s special team from Delhi. [8]India Today Arrested for a 1999 Money Laundering Case (2022) On 23 February 2022, Malik was arrested  by Enforcement Directorate (ED)  for money laundering case linked to  underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. The ED revealed it was found that Malik had bought a plot with help of Dawood’s sister Haseena Parkar (now deceased) in suburban Mumbai for Rs. 55 lakh instead of its then estimated worth of Rs. 3.3 crore. Reportedly, the land belonged Munira Plumber and was allegedly acquired in 1995 by Parkar through a forged power of attorney. The deal was struck by Malik through a company identified as Solidus Investments Pvt. Ltd, owned by Malik’s family. Plumber claimed she had given the power of attorney of the said land to a close associate of Parkar named Salim Patel for removing the encroachments from the said property. In 2021, Plumber discovered that her property was sold to Malik via media. Some Lesser Known Facts About Nawab Malik

• Nawab Malik is an Indian politician who is the National Spokesperson and Mumbai President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In February 2022, Malik made headlines when he was arrested by Enforcement Directorate (ED) for an alleged money laundering case.

• Hailing from Dhuswa, a village close to the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh, Nawab Malik’s parents relocated to Mumbai for better career opportunities in 1970.

• His father, initially a ragpicker in Mumbai’s notorious neighbourhood Dongri, later ventured into the scrap business with the help of Malik, which flourished over time.

• He actively took part in social reforming activities since his college days.

• In 1979, Malik was drawn toward politics after participating in a protest against a fee hike by the University of Mumbai. His participation in the protest became a turning point in his life, leading him to pursue a career in activism and politics.

• He ventured into politics via Yuva Congress, the youth wing of the Indian National Congress (INC) party. He worked with INC under the leadership of Indian politician Sanjay Gandhi.

• After Sanjay Gandhi’s demise in 1980, his widow, Maneka Gandhi, founded a political party called ‘Sanjay Vichar Manch.’ In the 1984 Indian General elections, Malik contested the elections for the first time from the Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha constituency seat as a candidate of the Sanjay Vichar Manch (SMV). In the elections, Malik lost the polls securing less than 3,000 votes. The seat was won by Congress candidate Gurudas Kamat by a margin of 96,274.

• A year later, a bypoll was declared on the Nehrunagar Assembly seat after the Supreme Court set aside Suryakant Mahadik’s election. In the 1996 Nehrunagar by-election, Malik contest the seat as a Samajwadi Party candidate and got elected as an MLA for the first time.

• In the 1999 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, Nawab Malik contested and won the Nehrunagar Assembly seat as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party, defeating Shiv Sena candidate Manohar Salvi by a margin of 18458 votes. In the elections, he was one of only two SP winners across Maharashtra. In  Assembly polls, Samajwadi Party decided to become a part of the coalition government led by Congress and NCP. Samajwadi Party became a part of the coalition government led by Congress and NCP after the assembly polls in which Malik was appointed as a minister of state.

• In February 2005, he had to resign from the post as he was indicted for corrupt practices. Three years later, he resumed his position as Minister of Labour.

• In the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, Ashok Chavan became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra as Vilasrao Deshmukh resigned from office. In Ashok Chavan’s ministry, Malik continued to serve as the head of the Ministry of Labour until 6 November 2009.

• The 2009 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections resulted in the formation of a coalition government of Congress and NCP with Ashok Chavan (of Congress) as the chief minister. In the Second Ashok Chavan ministry, Malik wasn’t appointed as a Cabinet Minister.

• After the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, a coalition government called Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was formed by the alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP, INC, with the support of the Samajwadi Party, PWPI, Prahar Janshakti Party, and several other political parties including Independent MLAs. In the MVA government, Malik served as the head of the ‘Ministry of Minority Development and Aukaf’ and the ‘Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’ from 30 December 2019 to 27 March 2022.

• As a guardian minister, he was allocated two districts, Parbhani and Gondia, where he oversaw the implementation of government policies from 9 January 2020 to 27 March 2022.

• After his arrest in the Money Laundering Case of 1999, NCP decided to keep Nawab Malik as a minister but took away his portfolios.
