Controversies | • Criticised for Charging Fees He has been criticised several times for collecting fees worth Rs 2000 each from the people attending his samagam. He also charged 10 percent salary of his followers. Later, a case was also filed against him for his fees. Some Lesser Known Facts About Nirmal Baba
- Nirmal Baba’s ancestors were Hindus.
- Initially, Nirmal Baba’s grandfather did not have any children. His grandfather then made a mannat that if he were blessed with a child, he would convert all his children to Sikhism.
- His mannat was fulfilled and within a few years, he was blessed with four children.
- In August 1947, his family migrated from Pakistan to India.
- After the murder of his father, to save the child, he was sent to Daltonganj in Jharkhand by his mother in 1970.
- He did his schooling in Samana, Delhi, and Ludhiana.
- After completing his graduation, he enrolled in MA English, but he was diagnosed with typhoid after two months of enrollment. He then quit his MA.
- At the age of 22, he decided to start his business for which he took Rs 90,000 from his mother.
- In 1974, he moved to Daltonganj where he started his brick kiln business.
- During an emergency in India from 1975 to 1977, his brother-in-law (politician) Inder Singh Namdhari was arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act. Inder Singh Namdhari then asked Nirmal Baba to take care of his cloth shop ‘Namdhari Cloth House’ in Gadwa.
- After Inder was released from jail, Nirmal Baba moved to Ranchi where he started his limestone and coal business. The business was a huge success. He then bought a bungalow.
- After a few months, while he was in his jeep travelling to Ludhiana, his jeep was hit by a major accident. He was then hospitalized at CMC Hospital in Ludhiana.
- His legs were fractured in the accident after which he was bedridden for around one and a half years. During this time, his business also suffered major losses and no one was there to look after his business in his absence.
- In 1983, after recovering, Baba, along with his wife and children, shifted to Delhi.
- In 1984, during the anti-Sikh riots, he was so terrified that he cut his hair and shaved his beard.
- After struggling there for a few months, he shifted to Baharagora in Jharkhand to do business.
- His firm Narula Minerals then got a contract from the Jharkhand State Mining Development Corporation.
- During this time, in the jungles of Jharkhand, he felt a spiritual connectivity. His family also started feeling a few changes in him. He had told a few things to his family members which turned out to be true and beneficial for them.
- Soon, people from their neighbourhood started visiting him for his blessings. Gradually, his followers started increasing. Initially, he used to have one-on-one conversations with his followers.
- Later, as his followers increased, it became difficult for him to conduct one one-on-one session. He then started organizing smagams.
- After his increasing popularity, various devotional channels started airing his samagams on television. His first TV samagam was aired in 2006. Some TV channels on which his smagams were aired are IBN 7, Aaj Tak, History TV 18, Sony TV, AXN, News24, and India TV.
- One of his TV shows ‘Third of Nirmal Baba’ became very popular among his followers. His other TV show was ‘Sixth Sense of Nirmal Baba.’
- According to his followers from different parts of the world, he has the healing power to cure diseases like typhoid, jaundice, and diabetes. According to them, he could tell about a person’s possessions just by talking over the phone.
- In April 2012, his website Nirmalbaba.com had over 42,000 hits per day. As per Google tools, it received 18 lakh page views by 8 lakh people. He had 3 lakh followers on Facebook and 42,000 on Twitter in 2012.
- Various sources say that he gives illogical solutions to people’s problems. Some of such solutions are eating red chutney or green chutney, keeping a black purse or wearing a black belt, and keeping a bundle of Rs 10 notes in lockers at home.
- Some sources said that he spreads the message of peace and unity.
- Nirmal Baba was then interviewed by a news channel, and he said that he had never claimed that he could do any miracle.
- Later, he started connecting with his followers through live videos on his Facebook account and YouTube channel.
