Some Lesser Known Facts About Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

In 1948, after the partition of India, his family moved from Basti Sheikh in Jalandhar, Punjab to Faisalabad in Punjab, Pakistan.

His father wanted him to become a doctor or an engineer as the profession of Qawwali artists had not given a reputed social status at that time.

The successive generations of his family have been following the traditional qawwali singing for more than 600 years.

He had started with learning the Tabla from his father, but after his father’s death, he had switched to vocal music, and recieved its training from his paternal uncles Mubarak Ali Khan and Salamat Ali Khan.

In 1971, after the death of his uncle, Mubarak Ali Khan, he was appointed as the successive leader of his family Qawwali Party named as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan-Mujahid Mubarak Ali Khan & Party.

He gave his first performance as the leader of Qawwali Party in a music festival, Jashn-e-Baharan, which was organised by Radio Pakistan in Islamabad.

In the year 1992, he was invited as a visiting artist in the Department of Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington.

He had performed at various international events such as the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in London, the Asian Traditional Performing Art Festival in Japan, and at Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

In 1988, he got associated with a renowned musician, Peter Gabriel for a project and sang a piece for the soundtrack of the film, ‘The Last Temptation of Christ,’ after which, Gabriel really got impressed with Nusrat’s strong voice and signed him under his Label, The Real World Record, as a singer for his next five Rock Music Albums. Some of his popular songs from those albums are ‘Khawaja Tum Hi Ho’, ‘My Heart, My Life’, ‘Tere Bin Nai Lagda’, and many more.

He got collaborated with Eddie Vedder to compose a soundtrack- ‘The Face of Love’ for the film, Dead Man Walking (1996), and also with Jonathan Elias to sang two songs- ‘Faith’, and ‘Benediction’ from his album ‘The Prayer Cycle.

In the year 1997, his albums, Intoxicated Spirit (1966) and Night Song, was nominated for the Grammy Award in the category of the best traditional folk album and the Best World Music Album respectively. His album, Intoxicated Spirit, includes some of his most popular songs such as ‘Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai’, ‘Ruk pe Rehmat ka’, ‘Meri Saqi Saqi Yeh,’ and ‘Be Wafa.’

He had also composed various Bollywood songs such as ‘Koi Jaane Koi Na Jaane’ & ‘Zindagi Jhoom Kar’ from the film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, ‘Ishq Ka Rutba’ from Kartoos, ‘Iss Shaan-E-Karam Ka Kya Kehna’ from Kacche Dhaage, ‘Dulhe Ka Sehra’ from Dhadkan, and many other blockbuster songs for various films.

His songs were so much enticing and popular in the Bollywood that some of the hit numbers of Bollywood has often been allegedly copying the music of Nusrat’s songs. One of such songs is ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast’ (Mohra- 1994), whose music is almost similar to that of the one of Nusrat’s song, ‘Dum Mast Qalandar.’

A. R. Rahman had featured a song ‘Allah Hoo’, in his album, Gurus of Peace, and composed a song ‘Tere Bina’ (Guru-2007) as a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

on 16 August 1997, at the age of 48 years, he died because of a major cardiac arrest at Cromwell Hospital in London. However, as per the report, the doctors at the hospital had also mentioned the use of infected dialysis equipment in Pakistan’s hospital as one of the reasons behind his death.
