| Controversy | Assaulting the doctors in KDMC hospital On 6 July 2026, a pregnant woman reached the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's (KDMC) Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli for delivery. According to hospital authorities, doctors examined her and informed the family that the newborn might require treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As all NICU beds remained occupied, the doctors advised the family that the patient could be shifted to another hospital if specialised neonatal care became necessary. Police said an argument followed over the treatment of the patient. The patient's relatives then reached the hospital along with Ramesh Mhatre and his supporters. Police alleged that they assaulted on duty doctor Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe, a woman doctor Dr Srushti Baviskar and two nursesNamita Ubale and Drvya Giri. Police also alleged that they abused them, threatened them and misbehaved with hospital staff. Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe later filed a complaint at Vishnunagar Police Station. Doctors, nurses and other hospital employees stopped work after the incident and demanded strict action against those responsible along with stronger security at government hospitals. CCTV footage of the incident circulated widely on social media and drew strong reactions from the medical fraternity. Medical organisations also demanded strict legal action against those involved. On 8 July 2026, Maharashtra Police arrested three of Mhatre's associates Akshay Karande, Rajesh Pawar, and Pramod Nikam. Later the same day, police arrested Mhatre in connection with Crime Number 195 of 2026 registered at Vishnunagar Police Station under Sections 132 and 121,1 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police also booked the accused under provisions related to criminal intimidation, intentional insult, unlawful assembly, rioting and the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions, Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property Act. The investigation continued. After his arrest on 8 July 2026, Mhatre said, "I regret the physical altercation that took place. I state with full confidence that I did not raise my hand against the female doctor." He denied assaulting the woman doctor and said he only slapped her mobile phone because she did not respond to their concerns. He claimed he acted in the interest of the patient and the newborn. On 8 July 2026, Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat condemned the incident and said assaulting doctors was not acceptable. The party issued a show cause notice to Mhatre and started internal disciplinary proceedings. On 9 July 2026, doctors resumed services after authorities assured them of better security at the hospital. The same day, Mhatre complained of chest pain a few hours after his arrest. Doctors admitted him to Thane Civil Hospital for treatment. Baviskar's family said she remained traumatised after the incident. |
