Controversies | • Backlash over WFI elected executive committee In December 2023, Sanjay Singh was elected the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) but many wrestlers reacted negatively to Sanjay Singh's victory because Brij Bhushan Singh, who was charged with harassing women wrestlers sexually, supported him, and was one of his closest allies. Following his victory, wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat spoke to the media at the Press Club of India during which they claimed that the government had broken its promise to keep Brij Bhushan's family members and associates out of the election process. Sakshi later declared her retirement from professional wrestling by setting her shoes on the table and saying, "If Brij Bhushan Singh’s business partner and a close aide is elected as the president of WFI, (then) I quit wrestling." Vinesh also expressed his dissatisfaction during the interview and said, "He (Sanjay Singh) is Brij Bhushan’s right-hand man. He is more special to him than his own son. Now that he is president, the coming batch of women wrestlers will also fall prey." Regarding the protesting wrestlers, Sanjay Singh stated in an interview, "Kaun kya bol raha hai, kya nahin bol raha hai, usse hume koi matlab nahin. (What someone is saying, or not saying, doesn’t matter to us.) We have no ill will towards any wrestler. Whoever will join us and wrestle well will be welcome. This is not just our victory; it is also the victory of the wrestlers." • Suspension of WFI by Sports Ministry On 24 December 2023, the Sports ministry suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) following a controversial announcement made by the newly-elected Wrestling Federation of India executive committee regarding the organization of the U-15 and U-20 national trials, in which the ministry argued that the wrestlers weren't provided sufficient time notice for adequate preparation. In a statement released by the sports ministry, it said, "The new body has not followed the WFI constitution. We have not terminated the Federation but suspended it until further orders. They just need to follow the due process and the rules." [1]The Economic Times |
