- Sonal Jha is an Indian actress who is known for various television shows and films. She is best known for her roles in films such as Lipstick Under My Burkha, 3 Storeys, and Chillar Party and TV shows such as Na Aana Is Des Laado and Balika Vadhu.
- She has been involved in theatre since her childhood. At 11, she started theatre with Patna Indian People’s Theatre Association. In an interview, she said that she was a shy and underconfident kid and the stage was the only place where she used to get attention and praise.
- When she was 15 years old, she used to perform as an actress and singer in Patna. She is a ‘Prabhakar’ degree holder in Kathak.
- She later moved to Delhi to pursue her postgraduate education. She left the theatre and focused on her studies. When she was pursuing her post-graduation in Delhi, she faced a lot of problems adjusting there because she had studied in Hindi medium till graduation and in Delhi, she was to study in English medium. Apart from the language barrier, she even went through a lot of cultural differences. She used to call her father and tell him that she would not be able to complete her studies, but her father motivated her a lot.
- After completing her education in New York, she started a job at an eminent company in Mumbai. She quit her job because of the work pressure. The experience of working in the corporate world taught her various aspects of life and how to interact with people from the corporate world.
- In 2000, she shifted to Mumbai with her husband and son because her husband got a job there. In 2004, she started theatre again and became a member of Ekjute Theater Group and learned a lot from Nadira Babbar, a famous theatre personality. She then acted in many plays all over India including ‘Ithihas Tumhe Le Gaya Kanhayiya’, and ‘Suman Aur Sana.’
- Later, she started her career as an actor. She gave some auditions but did not get any response from them. After performing in many plays, she was selected by Prakash Jha for the Bhojpuri television series Bahubali in 2008.
- In an interview, she talked about the initial days of her career when she found it difficult to manage as an actor and a mother. In the interview, she said,
It was also difficult on a personal front because I had a small child and managing home, kids, family and doing television. At that time, we used to work for over 13 hours. Then commuting will take another 2-3 hours. So you can understand staying outside for 16 hours and then to look after your kids and manage your home and that was challenging emotionally I used to go through this guilt that I am not giving enough time to my kid. Something which every working women goes through. And producers didn’t use to give attention to my problems. If it was my problem then I had to resolve it myself. Because I had the support and I didn’t give up, I adjusted to the groove. It wasn’t a bread and butter thing for me since my husband was getting paid well. I didn’t quit. Because if I had quit, the kind of groundwork I had done couldn’t have materialzed again.”
