Some Lesser Known Facts About Vidyasagar Sonkar

  • Vidyasagar Sonkar was born in Sukhipur locality of Jaunpur.
  • He had an RSS background and had joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, during his studies.
  • In 1985, Sonkar became a booth president of BJP. He was elected councillor in 1989 from Jaunpur and started active politics.
  • He went to Lok Sabha in 1996 on the ticket of BJP from parliamentary constituency of Saidpur (presently, Machhlishahr).
  • The government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee came to an end and his tenure was short-lived.
  • In 2000, he was appointed as the President of Jaunpur district by the party. During the years, Sonkar had been the State President of BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha.
  • He served in the state unit of Yuva Morcha and worked in the organisational work in Kashi and Gorakhpur areas.
  • He stayed active in the state working committee all through. In 2009, Sonkar lost the Lok Sabha election.
  • He was elected a member of the Legislative Council in 2016 by the BJP.
  • He was defeated in the Assembly election in 2017, but persisted in his party activities and was given significant organisational roles as a result of the election.
  • On 19 April 2018, the BJP won 11 of the 13 seats in the Legislative Council elections. One seat each was captured by the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.
  • The BJP had conducted six yatras in the state before the 2022 Assembly elections to connect with people. These six yatras were entrusted into Sonkar’s hands.
