Some Lesser Known Facts About Zabi Khan

  • Zabi Khan is an Indian animal rights activist. He is the founder of the NGO “A Place to Bark.”
  • He was born in a middle-class family in Hyderabad.
  • At the age of 13, Zabi spotted an abandoned puppy on a street. He tried to locate his owners, and when he couldn’t, he took the puppy to his home. He named the puppy Casanova.
  • The puppy fell sick and subsequently, passed away. During an interview, while sharing the incident, Zabi said,

He fell sick two days later. My father and I took him to a doctor, but Casanova passed away that night. The doctor had told my father that he had a severe bacterial infection — it was probably the reason he was abandoned. He was my first pet and I was heartbroken.”

  • After losing his pet dog Casanova, Zabi promised himself that he wouldn’t let any animal suffer like his pet.
  • He then started volunteering at Hyderabad’s NGOs and animal shelters.
  • In 2014, he founded an NGO “A Place to Bark,” which works to rehabilitate abandoned and abused dogs.
  • He opened the NGO with the support of his family in a rented place near his house.
  • When Zabi was doing an engineering course, it became difficult for him to manage his NGO. Subsequently, he came up with the idea of starting a shelter for animals inside his college campus and convinced the authorities for it.
  • His college, KG Reddy College of Engineering and Technology (KGRCET), Hyderabad, became India’s first animal-friendly educational campus.
