Some Lesser Known Facts About Zubin Bharucha

• Zubin Minoo Bharucha was born in Bombay, Maharashtra.

• From childhood itself he showed promise with the bat, and at the age of 18 he went to England to play as an overseas player for Reigate Priory Cricket Club.

• He represented the club for several years and picked up experience playing county level cricket there.

• Bharucha played age group cricket for Mumbai, then known as Bombay, before breaking into the Ranji Trophy team in the 1992-93 season.

• He made his first class debut in November 1992 and scored a century in that very match.

• He was part of the Bombay team that won the Ranji Trophy in the 1993 94 season.

• In the Irani Cup match of the 1994 95 season, playing for Bombay against Rest of India, he scored an unbeaten 164, his career best score, and helped his team lift the trophy.

• He also represented the India Youth XI along with his stints for Surrey County Cricket Club, for whom he played in 1995.

• In his first class career Bharucha played 17 matches and scored 1021 runs at an average of 42.54, with three centuries and four half centuries.

• In List A cricket he played 11 matches and scored 189 runs at an average of 23.63, with two half centuries and a top score of 72.

• He also took 7 catches in first class matches and 6 in List A games. His last appearance came in the 1994-95 season.

• After his playing days ended, Bharucha moved into coaching and cricket management.

• He set up the World Cricket Academy in Mumbai, where many Test cricketers have trained over the years.

• In the late 2000s he worked with Yuvraj Singh on his footwork. He also worked with the England and Wales Cricket Board on technical aspects of batting.

• On 1 January 2008, Bharucha joined Rajasthan Royals as their team director, a position he held until the team faced suspension in 2015.

• He also worked as the team’s head coach in 2012. During his years with the Royals, he studied players through video footage collected from around the world and scouted young Indian talent for the franchise.

• He is highly regarded in Mumbai cricket circles for his cricketing acumen.

• When Rajasthan Royals faced suspension for two seasons, Bharucha joined Delhi Daredevils, now known as Delhi Capitals, as technical director for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

• He then returned to Rajasthan Royals in 2018 and took charge as Director of Cricket, a post he held from 2018 to 2025.

• Over his years at Rajasthan Royals, Bharucha played a key role in developing young Indian players such as Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

• When Suryavanshi came up for trials before the 2025 auction, Bharucha strongly recommended that the franchise sign him, and the team went ahead with the pick.

• Even after leaving his official position with the Royals in 2025, he continued to work with these players as a personal mentor and batting coach.

• In 2012 Bharucha was among the signatories of a public petition that sought the commutation of Ajmal Kasab’s death sentence to life imprisonment.

• Kasab was the lone terrorist captured alive during the 26 November 2008 Mumbai attacks. The petition was linked to opposition against the death penalty and did not by itself establish support for Kasab or the attacks.

• His mercy plea was rejected in November 2012, and he was executed at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune on 21 November 2012.

• On 22 August 2026 Mumbai Indians appointed Bharucha as their Director of Performance ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
