She is an Ecuadorian politician and diplomat who was elected as President of the United Nations General Assembly for the 73rd Session in June 2018. She succeeded the Slovakian Miroslav Lajcak.

Maria defeated another woman- Honduras’ U.N. Ambassador Mary Elizabeth Flores Flake- by 128-62 with two abstentions in the secret-ballot vote.

Since 1945, only three women have presided over the United Nations General Assembly: Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, from India (1953); Angie Brooks, from Liberia (1969), and Sheikha Haya Rashed Al-Khalifa, from Bahrain (2006).

Besides being a politician, Maria is also a poet and essayist.
