  • When she was pursuing her undergraduate, she was interested in history. In her second year of college, she considered a career in civil service or politics.

  • In 1993, she spent 10 months in Moscow. She taught French and worked on a history thesis that described- “How the Soviet Union had used the big construction sites, like the Stalingrad Tractor Factory, for propaganda, and how propaganda requirements changed the actual shape of the projects.”
  • When she finished her PhD in 1999, she was immediately hired by MIT as an assistant professor.
  • She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002.
  • She holds the record of being the youngest person to get a Tenured position at a university at the age of 29.

  • Esther is also the founding editor of the American Economic Journal: “Applied Economics”.
  • Her book “Poor Economics” received worldwide critical acclaim. She also received “The Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award.”
