- Deepika Kumari hails from a financially disadvantaged family. Her father is an auto-rickshaw driver while her mother works as a nurse at the Ranchi Medical College.
- Deepika’s family couldn’t afford expensive equipment, so she used to practice with homemade Bamboo bows and arrows.
- Deepika Kumari started her professional archery career in the year 2006 when she decided to join the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur. It was here that she got access to proper archery equipment and uniforms for the first time in her life, along with a monthly stipend of Rs. 500.
- Deepika Kumari won the 11th Youth World Archery Championship that was held in Ogden City, Utah, USA back in 2009 when she was just 15 years old.
- Kumari had won her first Archery World Cup individual recurve gold medal at Antalya (Turkey) back in May 2012.
- She was conferred with the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting award in the year 2012 by President of India Pranab Mukherjee.
- The Government of India also awarded her with the country’s civilian honor, Padma Shri in 2016.
