  • Simranjeet’s ancestral home is in Chahal Kalan village in Batala in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab State.
  • Since childhood, Simranjeet wanted to become a hockey player. His paternal uncle, who saw his passion for the sport, took him to their home in Batala, Punjab, from Uttar Pradesh.

  • Simrajeet initially trained in field hockey in Patiala, and then he trained at Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar.

The Indian team won against Belgium by a 2-1 score. The team also included his cousin Gurjat Singh, who was named the Man of the Match in the tournament.

  • In 2017, he played in the Hockey India League (HIL) as a part of the team Ranchi Rays. In a match, he was awarded Rs. 50,000 and named Coal India Goal of the Match.

  • Simranjeet then played in the 2018 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy, which was held in Brenda, Netherlands, from 23 June to 1 July 2018. The Indian team reached the finals but lost to Australia by 3-1, bagging a silver medal.
  • In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held in Gold Coast (Australia), Simranjeet was part of the Indian team and won fourth place after losing the Bronze Medal match to England.
  • In the 2018 Asian Games – Men’s Field Hockey Tournament, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, Simranjeet participated as a member of the Indian team, which lost to Malaysia in the semi-finals, winning a bronze medal.

  • The next year, Simranjeet played as a part of the Indian team in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. The team became a winner of the tournament after it defeated the South Korean team by 2-4.

  • In the 2018–19 Men’s FIH Series Finals, held in Bhubaneswar, India, Simranjeet competed as a part of the Indian team that won in the finals against South Africa and bagged a gold medal.

  • In the 2020–21 Men’s FIH Pro League, Singh played as a part of the Indian team, which earned fourth place. The tournament was won by Belgium who was titled Champions of the tournament.
  • Simranjeet was chosen to be part of the Indian team for the 2020 Summer Olympics, held in Tokyo, Japan. Olympics was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After International Olympic Committee decided to include ‘alternate athletes’ in few sports (including Field Hockey) due to COVID-19, Simranjeet was added as a forward to the 18-member Indian field hockey team. According to a source,

    Varun and Simranjeet have been added to the 16-member side. Now it is an 18-member side. Though they are additional, both of them are up for selection in every match as per IOC’s special guidelines for Tokyo 2020.”

    India lost to Belgium in field hockey by 2-5.  In the bronze medal match against Germany, India won by 4-5, which brought India its first field hockey medal at the Olympics after 1980 (almost after 41 years); Simranjeet scored two goals (17th and 34th minutes) in the match.

  • In an interview, Simranjeet talked about his dream to play in Olympics, and his experience and India’s win in the game. He said,

    It was my dream and it will be an unforgettable experience. When I went to sleep last night, I was dreaming about making these goals and today I was able to fulfil my dreams and this is a very proud moment for us to help India lead in this game. Today we have made 1.3 billion Indians proud by finishing on the podium. This is a lifetime experience and we will try and continue this on to other tournaments.”
