  • Khush Seerat Kaur Sandhu was an Indian International shooter, whose name was highlighted in 2021 for committing suicide.
  • She had started her career with swimming, and had also won medals on National level. She then switched her sport and chose shooting in 2017.

  • In 2019, she won 11 individual medals and in team events, she also won seven medals in the 25m Pistol and 10m Air Pistol events.

  • She was found dead at her residence in Faridkot. It was reported that she had shot herself on her forehead with the licensed .22 pistol. It was also reported that the reason behind her committing suicide was that she was not happy with her performance in the 64th National Shooting Championship that took place in Peru.
  • Sandhu had not won any individual medal during the tournament, but she had won team medal in the junior civilian women team events.

  • She went to Delhi for the event, and after she came back, she was not satisfied with her performance. In an interview, her parents talked about the incident and said,

    Her performance was not at par during this year’s nationals. However, she did not betray any visible signs of disappointment. Had she shared what she was going through with us, we could have counseled her.”

  •  According to her parents, the incident took place at night on the ground floor where Sandhu was studying, and the other family members were sleeping on the second floor. She had shot herself during night, but her parents got to know about her death in the morning.
  • In an interview, her coach Sukhraj Kaur talked about her and said,

    She always showed willingness to learn. When we returned from Delhi after the nationals earlier this week, she was bit sad. But we did not know she would take this tragic step. We invite sports psychologists twice a year to counsel our shooters. It’s tragic to see the loss of life of such a talented kid.”

  • According to the police, no suicide note was found from her residence. The further proceedings were scheduled to be carried out under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
  • Inspector Harjinder Singh, SHO of Faridkot City police station talked about the incident and informed,

    We got a call from the control room about a girl allegedly having shot herself at her residence in Gali number 4 in Faridkot’s Harinder Nagar on Thursday early morning. On reaching there, we found the body of 17-year-old Khush Seerat Kaur Sandhu. She had shot herself with her .22 pistol and died of a headshot wound. According to the family, she was disappointed with her performance in the nationals held in Delhi earlier this week. We have handed the body to the family after autopsy and have launched the investigations.”

  • On 10 December 2021, Former Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh also expressed condolences to her family by posting a tweet.
