- Amma Sri Karunamayi is an Indian spiritual leader who immersed herself in praying and meditation at a tender age.
- Her parents, Sri Suba Ramana and Srimati Annapurna Ma, were devotees of an Indian Hindu sage Bhagawan Ramana Maharshi, who once whispered to Karunamayi’s mother that she would give birth to a divine mother who would heal thousands of people who will worship her. After Karunamayi was born, she was believed to have fulfilled Bhagawan Ramana Maharshi’s prophecy.
- When Amma was young, she began spending her childhood days praying and meditating in the worship room at her home. She avoided sleeping and preferred worshipping god over everything. When she was 21 years old, she locked herself in a room for an entire month.
- In 1980, she travelled on foot to the remote and sacred Penusila forest in Andhra Pradesh wearing a plain cotton sari just to meditate for hours. She even spent days and weeks in the forest without any protection from the wild animals. While meditating, she would sit still, which was amusing to the local villagers. Children used to throw pebbles at her to check if she was even alive; however, older people made offerings of fruits and food.
- In 1995, Amma travelled to the USA to give yearly public programs. Later, she started having international visits every year. Her meditation retreats take place in countries including Canada, Europe, India, and Australia.
- In 1988, she established a global non-profit organisation, SMVA Trust, which is in association with the United Nations DPI. The affiliation of SMVA Trust with Amma’s volunteer initiative programs is called Karunaseva Compassionate Service. Amma’s organisation provides free education to the underprivileged and assists them with free medical care and facilities.
- Amma is also the founder and spiritual head of Manidweepa Maha Samsthanam, an ashram that includes the Sri Lalita Parameshwari Devi Tri-Shakti Peetham.
- Amma is a part of multiple humanitarian projects including Sri Karunamayi hospital and Sri Karunamayi free school. She also runs a home for the elderly and does charitable food distribution. Sri Karunamayi hospital is a 100-bed free hospital, which provides quality medical care to underprivileged villages in Andhra Pradesh.
