Some Lesser Known Facts About Suella Braverman

• Suella Braverman is a British politician and barrister, who began to serve as the Home Secretary of the United Kingdom, succeeding Priti Patel, in 2022. She was appointed as the attorney general for England and Wales in 2020.

• When she was studying in school, she was good at both studies and sports. She used to play hockey and played the centre-back position in hockey. At the Harrow Hockey Club, she was once given the title of outstanding hockey player. In an interview, Suella’s father talked about her being a passionate player and said,
  

  She could go on the offence and defence. She was very strategy-minded even then.”

• When she was studying at Queens’ College in Cambridge, she held the position of President of the Cambridge University Conservative Association.

• She studied at Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris, France, under Erasmus Programme, a European Union student exchange programme, and later, she studied under Entente Cordiale Scholarship, which is a selective Franco-British scholarship scheme.

• In 2001, her mother, Uma Fernandes, was the Conservative candidate to contest the general elections from the Tottenham constituency.

• In 2003, she was listed on the Central Office candidates list.

• In 2003, her mother contested the by-elections from the Brent East constituency. Suella, at the age of 23, was also selected for the 2003 Brent East by-election as the parliamentary candidate of the Conservative Party; however, she did not contest the elections as her mother was contesting for the same seat. She, along with her father, did election campaigns for her mother and distributed leaflets.

• Later, she was featured in an article titled ‘The Road to No 10’ by The Guardian.

• In 2006, she qualified New York Bar exam and became eligible to practice law in New York.

• After she was appointed as the MP for Fareham to the House of Commons, she gave her maiden speech on 1 June 2015 and said,
  

  I will be a strong voice for Fareham. More than 1,000 young people travel too far for A-levels, and I hope to see more sixth-form provisions within the constituency. As an increasing and ageing population puts pressure on local GP services, schools and roads, I plan to be an advocate for all my constituents as we face the challenge of building more homes. It is a stroke of luck to be born British, and my indebtedness goes to the heart of why I am a Conservative. Our party rewards endeavour enables compassion and liberates people from the shackles of the state. Our party says, “It doesn’t matter where you start. • In 2015, she became a member of the Education Select Committee and the Education, Skills and the Economy Sub-Committee.

• In 2015, she was appointed as a member of the Joint Committee on the Draft Investigatory Powers Bill.

• In 2015, she founded and chaired the governors at the Michaela Community School, a free secondary school in London, England. She supports the building of free schools in Fareham.

• She is a member of the New Schools Network (NSN)’s advisory board, which is a United Kingdom-registered charity and former think tank helping in setting up free schools in England.

• In 2016, she joined the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, a scheme to experience the military life of the United Kingdom’s armed forces. In 2017, she graduated from the scheme.

• In 2016, she was appointed as one of the members of the inquiry panel of the think-tank British Future to inspect how the rights of EU citizens residing in the UK can be protected.

• She chaired the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on Financial Education from September 2016 to May 2017. While working as the chairperson of APPG, she collaborated with Young Enterprise, a national charity, and Martin Lewis, a journalist, and launched a report titled ‘Financial Education in Schools: Two Years On – Job Done?’ demanding better financial education in schools.

• In 2017, she was appointed as the commissioner of the Social Market Foundation Commission, which was found to remove inequality in education at primary and secondary levels in England and Wales.

• In 2017, she was appointed as the chairperson of the European Research Group. In the same year, she began to serve as the Parliamentary Private Secretary.

• Before getting married in 2018, Suella and Rael Braverman dated each other for three years. In an interview, Rael shared the story of how they met and began to date each other, and said,
  

  We met through some mutual friends, and then she invited me for a day in parliament. As far as first dates go it was certainly an unusual one, but I’ve always been interested in politics so I went along with it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and we agreed to meet up again. We had our first ‘proper’ date a few weeks later and it all took off from there.”

• In an interview, Suella shared that one of the reasons why they began to date each other was having common interests in politics. She said,
  

  Rael has just been so supportive of me in Fareham – I think the day I realised he was the one when he came out delivering leaflets for the election in the pouring rain.”

• In January 2018, during a reshuffle by the then-Prime Minister of the UK, Theresa May, Suella held the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union.

• On 13 February 2020, during a reshuffle by the then Prime minister of the UK, Boris Johnson, Suella held the position of the Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland.

• In 2020, she was appointed as Queen’s Counsel while she was serving as the Attorney General.

• When she was serving as the Attorney General, she was once criticised by Bar Council, the professional association for barristers, for making some unsatisfactory decisions.

• On 2 March 2021, Michael Ellis replaced her as Attorney General as she was going on maternity leave. On 11 September 2021, she resumed her office.

• On 6 July 2022, she called for the then Prime Miniter of the UK, Boris Johnson, for giving up his position as according to her, Boris Johnson was handling matters in a dreadful way during the United Kingdom government crisis, and allegedly, even the party members were not happy with his decisions and work. In an interview, while talking about it, she said,
  

  The balance has tipped now in favour of saying that the Prime Minister – it pains me to say it – but it’s time to go.”

• In 2022, after she lost the Conservative Party leadership elections, she began to promote Liz Truss, one of the candidates for the Prime Ministerial elections, in Liz Truss’ election campaigns.

• On 6 September 2022, she held the position of the Home Secretary of the United Kingdom in Liz Truss’ cabinet ministry. On 19 October 2022, she stepped down from the position.

• On 25 October 2022, she was reappointed as the Home Secretary by Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the UK.

• She supported Brexit and even campaigned for UK’s withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights.
• In 2022, under the UK and Rwanda Migration and Economic Development Partnership, she supported sending refugees and migrants from the English Channel to Rwanda. In an interview, while talking about this, she said,
  

  If I get trolled and I provoke a bad response on Twitter I know I’m doing the right thing. Twitter is a sewer of left-wing bile. The extreme left pile on is often a consequence of sound conservative values.”

• In a 2022 interview, Suella said that schools should treat students on the basis of their sex, instead of their self-identified gender. She said,
  

  Under-18s cannot get a gender recognition certificate, and under-18s cannot legally change sex. So again in the context of schools, I think it’s even clearer actually. A male child who says in a school that they are a trans girl, and that they want to be female, is legally still a boy or a male. And they can be treated as such under the law. During the trip, Suella told her father that she also wanted to become the President of the United Kingdom just like the then President of the United States Barack Obama. He replied to her and said that if Obama coming from Kenya could do it in America, you too can do it in England.

• In a 2022 interview, she talked about the pressures of being an attorney general. She shared a memory of hers when Russia and Ukraine were at war with each other, and she was called for a meeting at the office at 5 o’clock in the morning. She said,
  

  When Russia invaded Ukraine I got a call from my secretary at 2am to say the prime minister had called a 5am cabinet meeting. I rang Mum at 3am and said: “I’ve got to go.” And she said: “No problem, I’m coming.” The children (George, three, and Gabriella, one) were at nursery that morning as if nothing had happened. The pressure in my job can be excruciating. In a hypothetical crisis situation it is the assessment of evidence and legal advice given by the attorney general that is determinative. That pressure makes you very vigilant. When you’re up close to the role of prime minister, you see how tough it is — and I thought I could do it.”
