Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi is a runner from India who specializes in the 400-meter race.

He began his sports journey playing soccer in Palakkad when he was young. He even played in U-19 state-level football. However, his coach, Nanda Kumar, suggested that he switch from football to running. This led to Ajmal becoming a 400-meter sprinter. At first, he started as a 100-meter sprinter, but with practice and coaching, he transitioned into a 400-meter sprinter.

In 2019, Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi had his first international competition opportunity at the Summer Universiade in Naples. He ran the 200-meter race and reached the semifinals with a time of 21.18 seconds. He also ran as part of the Indian 4 x 100-meter relay team, but their time of 40.73 seconds didn’t qualify them for the final round.

At the 7th International Sprint & Relay Cup in Turkey, held at Atatürk University Stadium, Ajmal did really well. He finished in third place with a time of 46.04 seconds. Then, in 2021, he won a gold medal at the Inter-Services Championship, completing the race in 46.91 seconds. His great running continued into 2022, where he earned gold at the Indian Grand Prix with a time of 46.78 seconds.

In 2022, he joined the World Championships in Eugene and raced in the first round of the 4 x 400-meter relay. He finished with a time of 3:07.29 minutes but couldn’t advance further. Also in 2022, he became the Indian champion in both the 4×400 meter relay and the mixed relay. Then, at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham that same year, he took part in the 4 x 400-meter relay again, finishing in sixth place with a time of 3:05.51 minutes.

In 2023, he took part in the Asian Championships in Bangkok. In the 400 meters, he came in fourth with a time of 45.36 seconds. Moreover, his team, consisting of Amoj Jacob, Mijo Chacko Kurian, and Rajesh Ramesh, grabbed the silver medal in the relay event, finishing in 3:01.80 seconds. They ended up in second place, just behind the Sri Lankan team.

Muhammed Ajmal and his 4 x 400-meter relay team made history at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on August 27, 2023. They ran an incredible time of 2 minutes and 59.92 seconds, securing a spot in the World Championship Final. In the final race, they finished in 5th place.

In his very first 400-meter race at the National Services Championships in Bhubaneswar, he earned a gold medal by clocking an impressive time of 46.91 seconds.

During an interview in August 2023, he mentioned that his primary aim is to break the national record of 45.21 seconds set by the athlete Muhammed Anas.

Before pursuing a career in track and field, his original aspiration was to become a soccer player.

According to Ajmal, in India, there’s a higher chance of reaching international levels in the 400m event. However, to succeed in the 100m, a person needs to be exceptionally outstanding as a sprinter.
