Some Lesser Known Facts About Vivek Razdan

  • His family hails from Jammu and Kashmir.
  • He was the first player with origins in Jammu and Kashmir to play for India. [2]The Economic Times
  • During his time on the school cricket team in Delhi, he played alongside fast bowler Rahul Dev, while Bollywood celebrity Shah Rukh Khan was his wicketkeeper.
  • He played for India in two Test matches and three ODIs between 1989 and 1990.
  • He did his initial training in cricket at the National Stadium, New Delhi.
  • Vivek had a very short career in Test cricket
  • He bowled in only two innings for India during the 1989 tour of Pakistan. He took five wickets in the second innings, starting his career on a high note, but then faded away quickly.
  • At 20, Razdan was chosen for the Pakistan tour after just two first-class matches, one each in the Duleep and Irani Trophies.

  • He came into the limelight during the final Test at Sialkot on 9 – 14 December 1989. In the match, he used tricky movement off the pitch to take 5 wickets for 79 runs. His performance helped India take a 74-run lead in the first innings. This was his last Test match.
  • Both, Vivek Razdan and Sachin Tendulkar made their ODI debut against Pakistan at Municipal Stadium, Gujranwala on 18 December 1989. While Vivek was  20, Sachin was 16 at that time.

  • Later, he went on a tour to New Zealand, but didn’t play in the Tests and only took one wicket in first-class matches on the entire tour.
  • During the New Zealand tour, Sachin Tendulkar injured his calf muscle and was carried off the field by Vivek Razdan in the absence of paramedics.

  • His third and final ODI was against Sri Lanka at home during the 1990-91 season.
  • He was one of the first trainees at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, where he trained under the supervision of Dennis Lillee and TA Shekhar.
  • He represented Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Services in the Ranji Trophy.
  • Razdan played for Tamil Nadu in the 1990-91 Ranji Trophy.
  • Razdan played an important role in the Delhi squad that won the Ranji Trophy in 1991-92. He scored 93 runs in the final against Tamil Nadu.
  • He scored two centuries during the 1991–92 Ranji Trophy—one against Services off 96 balls and another in the quarterfinal against Bengal.
  • Besides his batting, he also took 23 wickets at an average of 25.82. However, his career soon faded away, and he retired from first-class cricket in the 1993-94 season.
  • After retiring as a cricketer, he became a TV cricket commentator. He has worked as a commentator on the Sail TV channel, Sony, Power Sportz etc.

  • Soon, he gained popularity for his Hindi commentary. He has a poetic way of doing commentary and recites various shayaris during it.
  • One of his lines in the commentary which gained popularity was  “Tuta hai Gabba ka Ghammand.” The line translates to “Gabba’s pride is broken.” The line was in reference to the historic Test match at Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2021 at the Gabba, Brisbane in which India beat Australia to take the series 2-1.

  • Later, he also coached various fast bowlers.
