- Before coming into football, Gurpreet tried his luck in both cricket and volleyball but could not achieve much success, He even joined the Punjab Cricket Association Academy in Mohali to pursue cricket but later dropped the idea due to not being given enough chances.
- When he was 8, he joined St Stephen’s Academy, where he performed well and was selected for the Punjab U16 team; he stayed with the academy till 2009.
- In 2006, Gurpreet made his Punjab U16s debut in Haldwani.
- Gurpreet joined East Bengal FC in 2009 as a youth player and later signed a professional contract with them in 2010.
- He went on loan to Indian Arrows FC (now Pailan Arrows) for the 2010-11 season due to being given less game time while playing for East Bengal FC in the 2009-10 season for which he had made only five appearances.
- After the 2011 Federation Cup, Gurpreet began to play regularly as the first-choice goalkeeper for East Bengal FC.
