Some Lesser Known Facts About Terry Wahls

  • During college, she did Taekwondo, a Korean martial art, and also became a national champion at the time.
  • In 1983, she began practising as a resident doctor in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Iowa. She practised there for three years up till 1986.
  • In 1986, she received her medical license from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
  • In 2000, Wahls moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where she began working as an associate chief of staff for ambulatory care at the Veterans Administration (VA) Iowa City Medical Center and as an Associate Professor of medicine at the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.
  • In 2003, Terry was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis which later progressed rapidly.
  • After a year of diagnosis, she got another diagnosis stating that her condition had secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. She began using a wheelchair to move around and was unable to continue practising medicine. She underwent various treatments including chemotherapy but nothing worked.
  • In 2011, she appeared at a TEDx event in Iowa City. During the TEDx, she shared her journey through Multiple Sclerosis and also shared the diet and therapy she underwent.

  • By 2017, her condition worsened and she became bedridden. Later, she began researching her condition and started self-experimenting.
  • The same year, she came across the Paleo diet, also known as the Stone Age diet that includes foods from the Stone Age, which are helpful in treating her condition. However, she was vegetarian but the diet included consuming meat so she began the diet.
  • Within the 6 months of her treatment, she began walking and started biking to and from work.

  • Later, she started writing a case report on her treatment with the help of her medical team at the University of Iowa.
  • In the case report, she recorded her dietary changes, supplements, neuromuscular electrical stimulation treatment and intensive physical therapy.
  • She has published many books on her journey with MS including The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine (2014) and The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions (2017).
