- His parents are Chinese immigrants. His mother is a native of Hong Kong, and his father is from Guangzhou, China.
- His family relocated to Costa Rica, where Shum and his two older sisters were born. When Shum was just six years old his family moved to San Francisco, California.
- Initially, Harry Shum had keen interest in theater and sports, but he found his passion for dance after he auditioned for his high school dance team as a part of a dare.
- Harry Shum attended San Francisco State University for a year, later he dropped out of the college to pursue a dance as a professional career.
- He speaks English, Spanish and Chinese. Harry’s first language is Spanish before he learned Cantonese and English. He later clarified that he has not spoken Spanish fluently since the age of 6.
