Some Lesser Known Facts About Ashraf Hamza

After completing his formal education, Ashraf Hamza began his film career by directing a short film titled Bihar, which was based on the story of U. P. Jayaraj.

Ashraf Hamza then worked on a feature-length film with his friend and film director Muhsin Parari.

Muhsin Parari once asked him to write a script after the 2015 film ‘KL 10 Patthu’ failed at the box office. The project was shelved, and this later became the 2022 film Thallumaala.

After that, Lijo Jose Pellissery and Chemban Vinod Jose asked him to direct an independent remake of the 2017 Kannada film Ondu Motteya Kathe.

Ashraf Hamza took the idea to Indian cinematographer and screenwriters Sameer Thahir and Shyju Khalid, who agreed to produce the film along with Lijo and Chemban.

The project was named Thamaasha in which Sameer Thahir worked as a cinematographer.

His film Thamaasha was released on 19 June 2019 and received critical acclaim. Vinay Forrt and Chinnu Chandni played the lead roles in the film.

His second film as director, Bheemante Vazhi, was released in December 2021. It was written and produced by Chemban Vinod Jose. Kunchacko Boban appeared in a lead role in the film. The film was a moderate success at the box office and earned good reviews.

In August 2022, Ashraf Hamza worked as a co-writer in the film Thallumaala with Muhsin Parari. After its release, it became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films.

His third film as a director was Sulaikha Manzil, which was released in 2023. Lukman Avaran and Anarkali Marikar played the lead roles in the film.

Ashraf Hamza introduced Muhsin Parari as a lyricist in the Malayalam film industry.

Muhsin was asked to finish writing the song Paadi Njan, an incomplete Mappilappaattu by Pulikkottil Hyder, for the film Thamaasha.

After that, Muhsin Parari wrote all the songs for Ashraf Hamza’s films.
Ashraf Hamza’s films are always filmed in and around Ponnani, his hometown, except for the film Bheemante Vazhi.

Chemban Vinod Jose worked as the co-producer of all three films directed by Ashraf Hamza. Jose wrote the script for the film Bheemante Vazhi.

On 27 April 2025, Ashraf Hamza came into the limelight when he, Khalid Rahman, and another person were arrested near Goshree Bridge, Kochi, by the Excise Department for keeping 1.63 grams of hybrid cannabis.

The arrest occurred following a raid on an apartment in Kochi, rented by cinematographer Sameer Thahir.

They were later released on station bail.

After their arrest for possessing hybrid ganja, Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) suspended him and Khalid Rahman as film directors. This move was part of FEFKA’s efforts to fight rising drug issues in the Malayalam film industry.
