Controversies | • Sentenced for Fraud & Forgery Case (2021) In 2021, Ashish Lata Ramgobin was sentenced for seven years by a court in Durban, South Africa, for committing fraud and forging documents. In 2015, she convinced businessman S.R. Maharaj to lend her R6.2 million (about Rs 3.3 crore) by claiming she needed funds to clear customs and import duties on three containers of linen for Netcare hospitals. To support her story, she presented fake invoices, purchase orders, delivery notes, and even forged bank confirmations—none of which were real. Maharaj lent her the money based on these false documents. After uncovering the dishonesty, he filed a case against her. The court found her guilty for fraud, forgery, and presenting forged documents, and sentenced her to seven years in prison. Additionally her appeal was also dismissed. [1] NDTV World |
