  • Shabana is the eldest of four siblings. She is a twin with her brother, and has a younger sister and brother.
  • From 1981 to 1986, she lived with her family in Taif, Saudi Arabia, where her father was working as a civil engineer on desalination. After that, her family moved back to Birmingham.
  • Shabana Mahmood’s mother worked in a grocery shop as a manager that the family bought after returning to England.
  • In an interview, Shabana mentioned that she failed the eleven-plus exam, a standardised examination conducted in England and Northern Ireland for some students during their final year of primary school for admission to secondary schools.

  • On 5 July 2024, Keir Starmer appointed Mahmood as Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor. After her appointment, she became the first Muslim and third female lord chancellor in history, after Henry III’s wife and Liz Truss.

  • In October 2024, she opposed and voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill on assisted dying, which is the process by which a person, with the assistance of a medical professional, takes actions to end their life.
  • On 6 July 2024, Mahmood was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of the British Monarchy, which entitled her to be styled “The Right Honourable.”
  • On 5 September 2025, Shabana Mahmood was appointed as Home Secretary in the 2025 British cabinet reshuffle, where she replaced former Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.
