  • Sachin Ahir is from Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • As for his family, he is the son of Ashalata, who is sister of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli.
  • Mohan Gangaram Bania, popularly known as Ahir, was his father and employed by Air India.
  • Ahir started his public career with his uncle Arun Gawli and the labour unions of Mumbai.
  • He joined one of the prominent labour organisations in Mumbai in 1993, the Rashtriya Mill Mazdoor Sangh.
  • He was its first secretary and then its president. He became a member of Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh in 1996.
  • He was engaged during this time with unions of Mazagon Dock and Mahindra and Mahindra employees.
  • Ahir carried out agreements for increment in salaries of workers in these industries.
  • His involvement in wage negotiations, labour settlements and worker mobilisation gave him a lot of influence in the traditional belt of mill workers in Mumbai, especially in central Mumbai and Worli.

  • His position in the NCP weakened after an electoral defeat at the hands of the undivided Shiv Sena.
  • He later quit the NCP and joined the then undivided Shiv Sena, ahead of the Assembly elections.
  • His induction had political importance as the Sena was ready with Aaditya Thackeray for the Worli seat.

  • The vote was the first direct election where a member of the Thackeray family was involved.
  • Ahir was instrumental in his mobilisation efforts as he had a strong organisational network and influence in the constituency, which helped Aaditya secure a victory by over 67,000 votes.
  • After the formation of Maha Vikas Aghadi government with Uddhav Thackeray, Ahir’s stature in undivided Shiv Sena increased further.
  • He moved up the ranks in the party and stuck with the Uddhav camp after the split in the Shiv Sena.
