Some Lesser Known Facts About Kavinsky
- Kavinsky was born in Seine-Saint Denis, France. He was considered as a founding member of the synthwave genre.
- Since childhood, he became fascinated towards 1980s films, television shows and video games, which later became the biggest inspiration for his music.
- In an interview, Kavinsky shared that as a child, instead of receiving formal musical training, he taught himself to play the piano.
- Before becoming a musician, he worked as an actor and did his acting debut in a French film, Nonfilm (2001). Later he appeared in several French films especially those directed by filmmaker Quentin Dupieux.
- In 2005, Kavinsky started making electronic music after being encouraged by his friend and fellow musicians, Quentin Dupiex and Jackson Fourgeaud. He originally started making music on an old Apple computer given to him by Quentin Dupieux.
- During the same time, he created the fictional character “Kavinsky” instead of performing as himself because he preferred telling stories through music rather than his real identity.
- Kavinsky was the fictional stage name created by Vincent Belorgey. The character had blue and glowing red eyes. According to him, Kavinsky died in a Ferraro Testarossa crash in 1986 and retuned as a zombie in 2006. After coming back to life, he started making electronic music.
Kavinsky is a character I created because just putting my face on a record sleeve isn’t something that suits me. Showing my own face holds absolutely no interest for me. I’d much rather make music and tell a story, because for me music is linked to images. When I’m making music, I have images in my head of films and television shows I liked when I was little. So I created this story that mixes all those memories together.”
- His first song, Testarossa Autodrive,” was inspired by the Ferraro Testarossa, a car that he also owned in real life. His song later featured in the video games Grand Theft Auto IV and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
- In 2006, he released his debut EP titled Teddy Boy. In an interview, Kavinsky revealed that the entire Teddy Boy was written and recorded using a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer, a keyboard famous in the 1980s.
