• On 13 October 2017, he made his first-class debut for Chittagong Division in the 2017–18 National Cricket League. He was only 18 years old at that time.

• In December 2017, Hasan was selected in Bangladesh’s squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

• On 5 February 2018, he made his List A debut for Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.

• However, his progress was affected by a series of back injuries, which delayed his rise to senior international cricket.

• In November 2019, he was selected for Bangladesh’s squad for the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Emerging Teams Asia Cup.

• Later in the same month, Hasan was selected for Bangladesh’s cricket team at the South Asian Games in Nepal. Bangladesh won the gold medal after beating Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the final.

• During the 2019-20 season, he entered the Bangladesh Premier Leage with Dhaka Platoon and made his T20 debut for the team on 12 December 2019.

• In 2020, Mahmud became part of Bangladesh’s senior international team and was selected for the T20I series against Pakistan.

• In May 2024, for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament he was named as a reserve player in Bangladesh’s squad.

•  In August 2024, he was selected for Bangladesh’s squad for the Test series against Pakistan. In the series he took his maiden Test five-wicket haul, finishing with 5 wickets for 43 runs and helped Bangladesh to win the series with 2-0.

• In September 2024, Mahmud created history by becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test match in India, finishing with 5 wickets for 83 runs agianst India in Chennai.

• On 13 August 2026, Hasan gave his best performance of his Test career so far by taking 6 wickets for 55 runs against Australia in Darwin.
